Conner gave a little smile, "My Annie is just like your wife—always on high alert. She gets suspicious before anyone even thinks of following her." His face turned somber, a hint of bitterness showing through. "Andre, do you think Annie would come with me to pay respects to my mom?"

The brothers talked for a bit longer before Conner got up. As he made his way back to the hotel, his thoughts were all over the place. Staying felt like he was letting his mom down, but leaving without Annie made him uneasy. And if he did take her along...

Annie would probably lose her patience. Why on earth would she want to go see his mother with him?

Lost in thought, he somehow ended up in front of the police station.

Annie had been busy lately. Just as she was about to head out for duty, she noticed a familiar car parked outside. By now, all her colleagues recognized her fiancé's car.

With everyone else heading out, Annie wandered over to the back. That's when Conner stepped out and called her, "Annie."

"What's up?" she asked.

Usually, whenever he saw her, he was cheeky and playful, almost to a fault. But today, his sudden seriousness, as if he was carrying a burden, made Annie worry unexpectedly.

Conner, hands shoved in his pockets, said with his usual roguish charm, "What could be wrong? Just missing you, that's all."

Annie rolled her eyes. "Stop pretending. I'm about to head out. If it's important, spill it. If not, we can chat when I'm back."

Conner hesitated for a moment, his Adam's apple moving as he swallowed. Then he grinned, "Nothing major. Just take care. You’re the apple of the Nettleton family’s eye. Watch out—someone might be envious or take it out on you."

Recognizing the lighthearted banter, Annie noticed her team waiting and said, "Can't chat now, gotta go."

She turned and hopped into her car, the police vehicle pulling away. She leaned out, catching a glimpse of Conner smiling after her.

For some reason, she could see past Conner’s forced smile to the sadness beneath.
