It was a call from Aimee that snapped Patrick back to reality. Over at the Hernandez Group, Aimee was soothing their little boy, who'd taken a tumble and was crying his heart out. "Hey, Aimee?"
The moment he heard his dad's voice, their son's sobs turned into softer whimpers, still clinging to the phone.
"Patrick, what are you up to? Can you chat with our little one? He was toddling around, lost his balance, and now he's been crying ever since."
Patrick turned around, "I'm out of town." He then tried to cheer up his son, "Hey, champ, say 'Daddy'."
But the little guy was too upset to call out for his parents.
The housekeeper set the food on the table, and feeling extra soft-hearted today, Aimee decided to spoon-feed him, showing all the motherly love.
Soon enough, he calmed down, and Patrick began to think about heading back. "Why’d you bring him to the office today?"
Aimee explained, "Grandpa had to visit the foundation and check up on the charity funds at various places. So, our boy hung out in my office."
Patrick noted, "Grandpa's getting a head start this year."
The Hernandez family runs a foundation that throws charity events and raises money to help build schools, buy equipment, and support the elderly and disabled in less fortunate areas. Seth, the foundation's founder, personally checks on some of the funded projects each year to ensure the money's being used right. They report back to the public clearly and honestly. Seth's surprise visits add a layer of trust, making the community respect Patrick and Seth even more.
As their son finally stopped crying, Aimee asked Patrick, "Did you find the person you were looking for?"
"Nope, just an empty house. No one's been around for over twenty years."
Aimee thought for a moment, "That's odd, it's like they're hiding."
Patrick agreed, "Yeah, seems like it."
"No need to worry; it won't affect us."
He knew Patrick would come back empty-handed.
On his solo trip back, with nothing to show for his efforts, Patrick felt a bit on edge but kept his cool, talking to his wife like usual.
"Patrick, do you think he might’ve changed his name?"
Patrick replied, "Even if he did, he'd have to update it officially. It’s not like he could just vanish."
Aimee realized she might’ve been naive, "Patrick, why are you looking for him anyway?"
