Jade returned home, ready to send Vivian packing. But this time, the roadblock was her mother, Coleen.
"Mom? Seriously? You want her as your daughter-in-law now? What's going on? Changed your mind about me?" Jade's last visit to the Byrne household had her feeling all meek and mild, barely speaking up.
This time, though, she was back on her turf. Days had passed, and she had come to terms with her relationship with Chad. Naturally, her boldness had returned too.
In front of everyone, she pointed at Chad, who was looking at her with that tender, indulgent smile, and said, "Even if you don't want me, it's too late. Your son is head over heels for me. He won't survive without marrying me. Coleen, you get to choose—Vivian or me."
Chad's face practically overflowed with a smile full of love. No matter when, every time he saw Molly, his eyes would light up with joy, even if she caused him all kinds of trouble.
Coleen couldn't stand to look at her daughter. "Get upstairs now!"
Jade crossed her arms and pouted, "Not happening."
Coleen threatened, "No allowance for you this month if you don't listen."
Jade shrugged, "Whatever, I'll just spend Chad's money... Ow, Mom, not so rough, my arm hurts—"
Her defiance lasted all of three minutes before she caved to her mother's strong grip. Coleen dragged her upstairs to the study.
Downstairs, Grandma Aubree and Grandpa Elmer were asking their grandson, "What does the Cedillo family think of your relationship with Molly?"
Chad watched Jade’s retreating figure until she disappeared, his smile fading with her. "I'm still working on it."
Grandma Aubree muttered, "What’s with our family? Always sisters marrying brothers."
"What do you mean?"
Upstairs in the study:
Jade burst into laughter, clinging to Coleen’s arm, "Mom, Mrs. Coleen, you're the light of my life!"
Coleen replied dryly, "So, you're just trying to get Vivian hitched to Dave, huh?"
"Is it important?" Molly chimed in, "Absolutely. Doing this, you’re dealing with two troublesome people at once! Juliana can’t match Vivian, but she’s delusional and clingy. Vivian has played the doting mother and daughter for years, but when her interests are at stake, she’ll drop the act and go to war with Juliana. And Juliana is a wild card— their mutual torment will keep our household worry-free.
This brings three benefits: one, saving a future in-law family from Vivian’s harm; two, rescuing any unfortunate girl from marrying Dave; and three, as an aunt, you’re finding a wife for your nephew, otherwise with his luck, he’d never find one."
Coleen tapped her daughter’s forehead, "You think you know it all." She continued, "I didn’t let her leave because I feared she'd run away. Plus, she could use your grandparents staying in Havenbrook to try to sabotage you and Chad. So I’ll turn the tables, use your grandparents to keep her in check, and push her marriage to Dave. If she’s so keen on playing the good girl for the elders, let her marry their grandson."
"What if she wants to marry my Chad, then what?" Molly voiced her deepest concern.
Would her grandparents prefer Vivian and push her onto their own grandson?
Coleen stated firmly, "No chance! First off, no matter how good Vivian is, she won’t measure up to their granddaughter with 'no merits.'"
