Chapter 6
I looked into Adrian’s hostile eyes, wondering why he despised me so, even after I gave him the opportunity to be free of me.
“Release her hand,” Alpha Lucas said in a furious tone.
“But Da-”
“Shut up!”
Adrian glared at me, and I averted my eyes.
Alpha–Lucas continued. “You decided to divorce her without consulting me? Have you forgotten what I told you before you got married?”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Adrian’s balled fists. I glanced at him only to see his face filled with rage.
I could see Adrian fuming with rage and balling his fists.
“What did you do that she had to take this step?” Luna Grace asked. When Adrian failed to reply, she turned to me. “My dear,” she said, concern etched on her face, “please explain to us what the problem is with him. We can find a solution.”
Memories flooded my mind. There had been so many times where I overlooked Adrian’s faults, starting on our wedding night when he poured a bottle of wine on me, showing me what he thought of me. From the beginning, he spoke harsh words, laced with contempt, even calling me names while insisting I would never win his heart.
That had proven true. Despite all my efforts, he had never treated me like a wife. Our home, our marriage, had always felt like a mere façade. Instead of behaving as a husband, he had come and gone at his whim, leaving me feeling like a discarded toy, a vessel for his disdain.
So many times, he had accused me of entrapping him, and he had never believed me, no matter how many times I denied it. In reality, I had been also been drugged that night. I’d even lost my virginity to him, and it hadn’t been of my own design.
The following day, I was equally taken aback when I woke naked next to a complete stranger. I hadn’t known he was destined to be the future alpha, either.
However, I had always heard that he was a very cruel man, and after being married to him for two years, I could confirm the accuracy of that rumor. He had been brutal, never once showing any affection for his wife, and I was always his unwanted wife. I did not want to be with him anymore, not after the statement that he made to me after he signed the divorce papers. The idea of living by myself with my children was appealing, as I had no need for love or desire at that time; I merely desired to have peace of mind.
So now, I simply needed to get away from him–and get my babies away from him, too. Tears welled in my eyes, and I couldn’t find my voice to answer Luna Grace.
Alpha Lucas turned to me. “Come to my office,” he said, then stood and headed in that direction. I followed, with Luna Grace by my side.
When I turned my head to the side, I was surprised to see Adrian trailed behind us.
