Just as Scarlett was looking through the menu, she caught a glimpse at Linley, and she narrowed her eyes and asked, "Is that Roland?"
Linley looked at Scarlett and nodded, "Yes."
Scarlett ordered her food. She handed the menu to Katherine and then she asked Linley, "Do you mind turning on the speaker?"
Linley handed her phone straight to Scarlett. Scarlett picked up the phone and she turned on the speaker.
Roland's angry yell came through the phone, "Linley, you got a nerve! You threatened me and demanded a divorce! And you told our neighbors that I was cheating on you! Do you think I can't do anything about you?"
Roland continued to yell, "If you don't send all the furniture back, you won't see me at the City Hall!"
Somehow, he thought his threat wasn't frightening enough. He added, "Linley, believe it or not! I can send you all to hell, you and your poor parents!"
Since Roland was a child, this was the first time he had been threatened like this.
He had been furious when an old lady had just blamed him for cheating. When he got home and found that all the furniture was gone, he exploded with rage.
He thought Linley should be glad she was around him right now, otherwise, he'd be beating the crap out of her, not to mention giving her a divorce!
Linley had been married to him for two years. In the first six months of their marriage, the two had some happy days. But the Holden family was powerful in the town, and Roland had been a jerk since he was a kid. After the passion and illusion faded, Roland began to show his true colors. Whenever he felt not happy, he would hurl insults or throw punches at Linley. He was a monster.
Linley put up with that for over a year to keep her parents from worrying. It was not until Linley's old story was exposed and Roland later boldly took his lover out in public that Linley filed for divorce.
But Linley had been bullied by the man for so long that she was used to being afraid and submissive to him.
Now Linley had made up her mind to get a divorce, but still, a deep-seated fear was in the bottom of her heart.
