Ryan didn’t have a choice—he was practically dragged onto Simon’s boat.
Simon wasted no time. “Clara’s been kidnapped by Dylan,” he said, his voice tight.
Ryan’s heart dropped. He knew Clara hated Dylan—she’d told him so more than once. And now Dylan had forced her into marriage? That was it. Ryan couldn’t just sit back anymore.
Simon was pacing the deck, phone glued to his ear, barking orders. Between calls, he glanced at Ryan. “You really don’t know anything about Clara’s past?”
They’d been obsessively piecing together information for days. Simon knew how much Ryan cared about Clara—she could be from anywhere, any family, and Ryan would still want to protect her.
Then Simon dropped the next bombshell: Dylan had forced Clara to register for a marriage license. Worse, Dylan already had a kid with someone else. Ryan’s anger boiled over.
The whole thing had started as a joint plan between him and Simon. Even Cole had tried to talk Ryan out of it, but the thought of Clara being trapped with a man she despised drove him crazy.
“I don’t know. Maybe my dad does,” Ryan said quietly, his voice strained. He looked exhausted. Even if they managed to take down Dylan, they still hadn’t found Clara. She hadn’t tried to reach him either.
What neither Ryan nor Simon realized was that Clara had been in that car the other day. Their original plan had been to take Dylan out together, but since he walked away without a scratch, they figured they’d failed.
Simon was just as frustrated. How could Dylan still be alive after all the planning? Now he was waiting for Dylan’s revenge, but two days passed and Palm Bay was silent.
Still, Simon was convinced Dylan wouldn’t come after Ryan. As long as Ryan kept his head down, he’d be safe.
“Ryan, stop worrying about Clara. If we think things through and really hurt Dylan this time, she’ll have the chance to escape. Once she’s out, I’ll take her somewhere far away—Dylan will never find us.”
Ryan was in on the plot, but he didn’t trust Simon for a second. In his mind, no one was good enough for Clara.
Dylan was bad news—he deserved a punch in the face. Simon was even worse—he deserved two.
But right now, the only thing that mattered was finding Clara.
Ryan stayed silent. He knew Simon was using him, but he didn’t care. If it meant getting Clara away from Dylan, he’d take on anyone.
