Although Nancy was trying her best to move on, Charles would always pop out of nowhere and ruin her plans.
How could she start over when he would pester her every now and then?
The man evidently had no clear grasp of the term break up. He was just too stubborn to give up!
"You just don't want me to have a good time, do you?" Nancy snorted, obviously annoyed that Charles had once again managed to destroy her day.
"I'm not feeling any better than you," he replied, lighting a cigarette.
"How many times do I have to tell you? We have separated, Charles! You can't pull this stint anymore!"
"Is this the reason why you're going on a blind date?"
Nancy was surprised at what he said. "Oh, so now you're stalking me?"
"You haven't answered my question yet." With extremely furrowed brows, Charles intently looked straight at her eyes.
"Why should I answer you? It's none of your business!"
When he heard the mockery on her tone, he was suddenly angered. And to contain his rage, he pinched her chin and said, "Listen, Nancy. That's where you and I disagree. You see, I will never let you marry or even date someone else aside from me."
"We're not in a feudal society anymore, Charles. You don't own me and have no right to stop me from doing what I want!" Nancy protested, sporting an arrogant expression on her pretty face.
"Please don't be so selfish, Nancy! Think about the kids. Nadia and Bobby get along very well, and your daughter had finally accepted me! We can finally give them a complete, happy family! If you date another man, how could you be sure that he'll treat Nadia as his own?"
For once, Charles sounded so rational even though a hint of desperation could be extracted from his voice.
Even Nancy was surprised to hear him so talkative. And more than that, he seemed to have a lot to say.
"What if he doesn't treat Nadia well? Are you going to divorce him? Think about that! You can't just go around dating whoever you like when you have a daughter to think about!"
"So what? You're not even the right one for me! How can you speak like that?! Your grandfather, mother, and your whole family think that I don't deserve you. So why should I force myself on you?! We're not gonna be happy together, Charles! Not when your family opposes our relationship!" A pang of pain and bitterness coated Nancy's tone as she expressed the sentiments she had been keeping to herself.
If she were to be honest, she also wanted them to be together and build a happy family.
But their marriage was already out of the question the moment his family got involved. After all, it was not just a union of two people, but of the family too.
With so many people against their love, how could the two of them fight for it?
"I don't care if they're against it! I just wanna be with you! You're all that matters! Only you, Nancy!" "Let's stop talking about this." Nancy cut him out immediately, feeling slightly dizzy from all the stress she had gathered recently.
Why did everything have to be like this?
She just wanted to be happy just like anybody else.
Was it what happened five years ago that ultimately decided her fate?
Could Charles really change the course of her life? Or would he be her biggest downfall?
Nancy didn't sleep well that night as those thoughts filled her mind.
Even Charles, who was so desperate to get her back, was pounded with those thoughts.
Both of them tossed and turned on the bed until the clock hit, and the devil's hour and dawn sipped through the night.
Morning came, and the two walked out of their room, ready to take on the day.
Charles drove Nadia and Bobby to the kindergarten after breakfast while Nancy went to the hospital.
The latter had not even fully settled in her office when Erin came rushing in.
As she was unwilling to be around Jessie, Nancy got Erin work for her.
"Dr. Nancy, someone is looking for you outside."
