The man with the beard aimed to hit Edward's chest, but before making contact, Edward had already grabbed his hand. He pushed him back roughly; the man staggering before hitting the ground.
Bobby and Nadia watched them fight, their mouths gaping. When the man fell to the ground, they clapped their hands and cheered, "Awesome!"
Edward turned to face the children, his chest heaving. Amused with their astonished faces, he winked at them. "Call me dad?" he asked playfully.
"Dad!" the two children shouted in unison.
Nancy blushed as she watched their exchange.
"Hey! You wait and see! I'll teach you a lesson..." the man grumbled incoherently. Despite his threats, the man knew he was no match for Edward. He'd experienced his fair share of fights and knew when to cut his losses. He struggled to get himself upright, and then walked away, feeling humiliated.
"Are they... your children? Are you... married now?" Edward asked.
There was a twinge of disappointment in his voice.
"Not married," Nancy clarified. "But you're right. These are my kids!"
"Dad, I'm mommy's biological daughter, but my brother Bobby isn't!" Nadia interrupted. She still couldn't fully comprehend the relationship between her and Bobby. In her mind, Bobby was Charles' child and Nadia was Nancy's.
Even though the two had a close relationship, and spent countless hours together every day, they were not the same mother’s children.
"Dad, don't listen to Nadia! I'm also mommy's child!" Bobby grumbled unhappily.
Edward smoothed his hair and said, "This sounds a bit complicated..."
"It’s a long story. I'll tell you about it another time," Nancy said, taking a deep breath. "Why are you here, Edward? Are you here to have dinner? You haven't eaten yet, have you? I'll treat you to a meal, to repay you for all the trouble," she offered.
"Ah, yes. As soon as I came in, I saw that bastard bullying the kid. I didn't even get a chance to order," he said sheepishly, scratching the back of his head. "Don't worry about it! It's my treat," he argued. He paused before saying, "For old time's sake."
"Yes, sir!" When Nancy spent time abroad, Edward never let her pay for any of her meals. He would always treat her, but she never got the chance to repay the favor. "Edward, you just came back! I should treat you to a meal, I insist."
"Okay, whatever you say! Thank you," he replied in a playful tone.
"You’re very welcome. What would you like to eat?" she asked with a bright smile.
Edward smiled back at her gently. His smiling eyes reminded her of the sun. It was a smile that was neither arrogant nor imposing, but gentle and warm.
His voice wasn't too fast or too slow, but just right. It was charming and attractive. Everything about him was.
Edward motioned for her to take a seat, before sitting beside her. "You are my host and I am your humble guest. I'll eat whatever you order."
Nancy looked over the menu, saying, "I remember you liking fried goose liver, large meatballs, and fish-flavored shredded pork..."
He smiled at her thoughtfulness. He reached out and gently took the menu from Nancy's hands. "I'm touched that you still remember all my favorite foods. There's no need to order that much, though. Order some for the children and let them eat more. I'm trying to lose weight, anyway."
Bobby exchanged a mischievous look with Nadia and thought, 'This 'dad' is cool!'
"Alright, I hear you. I won't order too much." Nancy gestured for the waiter and ordered two more glasses of orange juice and a bottle of red wine.
"How have you been, Nancy?" Edward looked at her thoughtfully.
"I've been..." she paused, struggling to find the right words. "Okay," she finally said, taking a deep breath.
"It seems like you have something on your mind. You know you can talk to me if you have any problems. Your problems are my problems, right?" He nudged her arm softly.
"I'm fine, Edward." Nancy wondered how she would tell Edward about what happened between Charles and her.
She decided she wouldn't dive into too many details about her past if he asked.
"I've been thinking about you since I came back. I'm worried about you. But if you insist you're okay, then I'm okay," he reassured her.
"I know, I know."
Nancy remembered how kind Edward had always been to her. For the last five years, he had been the only man who always treated her with kindness.
