Chapter 248
Every word was another knife tisting in my gut. The ritual, the transformation, the proposal–all of it had been calculated, designed to turn me into a weapon against Kaius.
“You fool. She is only using you for her personal gain; when she doesn’t need you anymore, you would be tossed away like the trash
you are.”
Kieran slapped me, hard. The blow snapped my head to the side, pair blooming across my cheek.
“I’ll be careful of what I say if I were you; you are under my control ow, and I could really hurt you. His eyes, once warm when looking at me, had turned to ice.
I glared back, refusing to show weakness. “I am not afraid of you, Kieran; do your worst.”
A cold smile spread across his face. “You were always a bold one, but the problem was your emotions; they are your greatest
weakness.”
“Why not take your crappy insights and shove it right up your manhole,” I spat, pulling against the restraints that bound me to the chair.
He circled me slowly, like a predator assessing its prey. I tracked his movements, calculating my options–which were, admittedly,
few.
“Thalia would betray you; I mean, that’s what she does best; you are nothing more than a tool to her.” I needed to drive a wedge between them, create any opportunity I could.
His expression darkened. “Are you any different from her? You used me; I helped you heal from all the hurt the bastard inflicted on you; we made a deal, but of course, you broke it; you went back to him and returned my wedding ring like that solves it all. You aren’t much different.”
The accusation stung more than I cared to admit. “You lied to me; you hid the truth from me and left me suffering the consequences.”
“What did you think? That there would be no consequences? That the dark side would grant you power with nothing in return? If you thought that, then maybe you are the fool.” He leaned closer, his breath hot against my face.
I turned away, disgust rolling through me. “You want to know why I left you even after everything? It’s because you were never going to be what I wanted; thinking about a life with you filled me with dread; I would never be able to love you because my heart belongs to someone else.”
The blow landed exactly as I’d intended. Rage flashed in his eyes, his jaw tightening.
“And you didn’t know this when you were making the deal? You are no different from him; you both make deals you know from the beginning you will never be able to keep to, but you make it anyway for your personal gain, and in the end you don’t keep to your part.” His voice had dropped to a dangerous whisper:
“Poor Kieran, should I feel sorry for how heartbroken you felt because I don’t.” A cruel smile twisted his lips. “Your mother did think I was the better choice.”
My blood ran cold. Leave my mother out of this else-
“Else what? You are chained to a chair and completely helpless; there is nothing you can do.” He moved closer, his eyes glittering with malice. “But don’t worry, Gabriel likes her a lot, and so for his sake, I wouldn’t harm her… yet. But if you push me, then I might have to be the bad guy.”

Chapter 248
“As much as your bickering is very interesting to listen to, we have better things to discuss.” Thalia’s voice cut through our bitter exchange as she stepped forward from the shadows.
I turned my attention to her, the real threat in the room. “Kaius would come for me, and all of you will be sorry.”
She laughed, the sound like broken glass. “Is that what you think? Her smile widened, revealing too many teeth. “Well, Kaius would be coming here, but not to save you, no darling; he would be coming here as a… prisoner. We made this little plan, and for you, he would fall right into it.”
Fear clutched at my heart. “Don’t you dare do anything to him.”
