I whirled on Thalia, rage overcoming fear. “What did you do to him?

“Me? No, this time it hadn’t been me behind this.” She examined her nails casually, as if we were discussing the weather rather than the systematic torture of a man. “This is all Soren and Caleb’s doing. The boys have been busy, and they believe they’ve found something that could affect the Lycan–how wolf’s bane affects wolves, and from the looks of things, it worked.”

Horror washed through me as I realized what she meant. The wolf’s Bane extract–the same poison she’d tried to make me use on Kaius–was now being pumped directly into his system in concentrated form.

I turned back to Kaius, gently placing my palm against his clammy cheek. His skin felt wrong–too cold, too human. The wolf that had always burned beneath his surface was fading, being systematically destroyed by the poison flowing through his veins.

“Please stop this; you could kill him.” I couldn’t keep the desperation from my voice, the panic rising like a tide in my chest.

“I don’t want him dead either; I want a worse faith for him.” Thalia moved to stand beside me, her cold fingers trailing along Kaius’s shoulder possessively. “I want to take away his wolf side and let him live the rest of his life as a human, but to convince the others to go with that choice, it would take some serious… effort.”

My worst nightmares were manifesting before me. Every chilling detail from my dreams – Kaius taken, broken, reduced to something less than himself – was no longer just a terrifying vision. It was happening now, a horrifying truth slamming into me.

I looked at the tubes feeding the black poison into his body.

“The weapon won’t kill him; it would only take away his wolf.”

I clung to this realization, desperate for any sliver of hope. I could handle Kaius losing his powers–but not his life. Never his life.

“What do I have to give in exchange?”

Thalia’s smile widened, satisfaction gleaming in her ancient eyes. “Now you seem to understand me better. You will give your life for his. To appease Soren and Caleb, I would have to grant them something in exchange for Kaius’s life.”

A strange calm settled over me. My life for his. The choice was immediate, instinctive. I’d give myself a thousand times over to save

him.

But even as I opened my mouth to agree, something in her expression told me it wouldn’t be that simple.

“You don’t need my consent to kill me, Thalia, and we all know that, so tell me what exactly do you want.”

“Fine,” She circled around Kaius’s chair like a predator savoring its kill. “I want you to go up to Kaius and tell him everything. Tell him how you killed those soldiers and the little girl; tell him how you hate him; and better make it real.”
