CHAPTER 27
Marcus was taken aback when Daniella demonstrated her indifference once more. He was certain they were getting along well at dinner, and she even laughed when he told her a dumb joke. "Is there a problem?" he inquired.
"I'm alright," Daniella stated with a nod of her head. To be really candid, she was not well and her heart was not doing properly. She was in agony on the inside, but she couldn't tell him how she genuinely felt without appearing sad.
When they arrived at the hotel, Daniella didn't bother to say him a proper farewell; instead, she walked to the elevator and hit the button to ascend. She needed to retreat to her room quickly before allowing anyone to see her cry.
Marcus made no attempt to compel himself and just headed to the front desk. "Is there a room on the same floor as my wife available?" The receptionist regarded him as if he had sprouted horns in his head. "A lover's dispute," he continued, and the woman in charge nodded in agreement. It wasn't difficult to think he and Daniella were simply having a lover's quarrel, since they left together to eat outside and returned together.
Marcus struck gold when the room next to Daniella became available. He smiled as he walked to the elevator with the card key in his hand. There was something bothering her, and he would allow her sufficient time to gather her feelings. Later in the evening, just as the clock struck twelve, he would knock on her door with a midnight snack. He had already directed the in-charge to send Daniella's favourite snack five minutes before the clock struck twelve.
He was exhausted, but he dared not close his eyes, regardless of how comfy his bed was. He rushed up to open the door when someone knocked. "Thank you," he responded, generously tipping the man for bringing his particular order. He returned to his room to inspect his look before appearing in front of her.
Marcus was already outside her hotel room three minutes before midnight. He had already knocked numerous times and she had not opened the door. Was she already asleep? He should not have waited till midnight and immediately followed her, he chided himself.
He was going to return to his room when the sound of a door opening caught his attention. Marcus rehearsed his best grin and welcomed Daniella as she opened the door. "Special delivery for a special woman," he remarked, not waiting for her to welcome him in, but he was taken aback by the shambles within. "How did you get here?" When he noticed the plastic wrappers of junk foods on the floor, he questioned her. She made no attempt to discard them.
"Ignore it; else, why are you here?" Isn't it the middle of the night?" She enquired.
"I packed some snacks for you, Dani." He responded, but it appeared as though the woman would not require the meal he had brought. Given the quantity of plastic wrappers on the floor, she has consumed a substantial amount of food.
"I appreciate that, Marcus, but you did not have to." She responded, but inquired as to the kind of the meal he brought in. When she realized it was one of her favorites, her eyes became wide with joy. "Would you like some?" She inquired as she began scooping ice cream from the container. It's double dutch and has been her favorite for years, but how did he find out about it?
Marcus nodded and sat next her, accepting the dish of ice cream. "Would you mind telling me what's going on with you?" He sought to know what had previously soured her attitude.
After consuming a taste of the chilly ice cream, her heart softened somewhat. "I believe... I simply disliked the notion that you have another lady in your heart."
"I apologize," he stated.
She would have rather that he had informed her that he had forgotten about that woman. He didn't, and he even expressed regret. "I'm not sure what I'm going to do with you, Marcus. A part of me desired to give you another opportunity, but the other half was fearful of being wounded."
"I understand, Dani, but perhaps we can take it day by day." He made a suggestion.
"How?" She was perplexed by his proposal.
"First and foremost, you will let me to remain here till dawn." He opted to be sufficiently daring and awaited her reaction.
Daniella laughed, as it was rather amusing. "You're doing well, Marcus. Is that your strategy for seducing that woman?"
"I wish you would refrain from speaking to Veronica in that manner, Dani. If you are envious, simply inform me. You are not required to offend her," he admonished her with a low voice that conveyed the same message.
Yes, she was envious, and he should have made an attempt to console her! Rather than that, Marcus chastised her for offending that woman? The audacity! She arched one of her brows and directed him toward the door. "Leave! If you believe I've offended that woman, you'd better leave me alone!"
"Would you kindly be reasonable?" Why are you so difficult to deal with?" He became irritated with Daniella's behavior since it was too juvenile for someone in her early thirties!
"How did you learn to deal with me? Was I compelled to bring you here? That I did not!" She shouted at him and pushed the ice cream bowl to the side of the table. She walked over to the door and held it open for him. "Please excuse me," she replied as she waited for him to rise from his seat.
