Chapter 399
The man clasped his hands tightly, looking at his son kneeling on the ground. “Pete, get up.” He said.
Pete rose to his feet, “Dad, we’ve been under the thumb of the Lindberg family for years. What have we really gained? Are you really okay with this?”
David squinted, with only one eye able to see. At the moment, his sharp gaze and the hollow prosthetic made a stark contrast.
He was silent for a few seconds, “Pete, now’s not the time.”
Something stirred in Pete’s heart, “Dad!”
David seemed to know what he was going to say and cut him off, “Now’s not the time to discuss this. I’ve dealt with your matter with Penelope. Lucian won’t find out in the short term, but with his resources, he could easily figure it out if he wanted. I’ll immediately arrange for the vice dean to be transferred from Northfield. What you need to do now is keep Penelope steady.”
Pete nodded.
David continued, “You really are reckless. If Penelope backed out and it turned out that the chandelier hurt Miranda, Lucian would go crazy and if Penelope ratted you out, we would be all done for!”
Pete hadn’t considered this. Hearing David’s words, he realized his mistake and felt a chill run down his spine. At the time, he had only tampered with the chandelier and arranged for an ambulance to be nearby. He hadn’t considered the deeper implications.
If Penelope got cold feet, dodged the falling chandelier, and Miranda got crushed by it, the consequences would be unimaginable.
“Dad, I’ll be more careful in the future.” Pete said.
David looked at his son and sighed, “Alright, we’ve got all the doctors in the hospital under our control. Let’s just leave it at that. Keep an eye on Penelope, and make sure she stays quiet, no more causing trouble.”
“I got it, Dad. Don’t worry, Penelope is in the same boat as us now, she wouldn’t dare stir up trouble. She lost her baby and nearly lost her life trying to save Miranda. The charity dinner had almost a hundred of Northfield’s elite families, as well as the major media. I’ve already spread the news. Once she’s recovered, Lucian will definitely marry her out of guilt and public pressure. It’s also in our best interest if she becomes part of the Lindberg family.” Pete said.
David knew all this, of course. His ambitions were always hidden. In the Lindberg family, he was seen as a strict and fair steward. Who could really see what he was thinking?
David regarded Pete-approvingly, “You did well on this one.”
