Chapter 406
The first possibility was an internal dispute within the Lindberg family. The second possibility was that Penelope herself didn’t want a child. Zachary could tell that Carter and Lucian had also realized this, as the three of them exchanged silent glances.
Carter asked, “How is Penelope doing now?”
Lucian replied, “She hasn’t woken up yet.”
Carter said, “When she wakes up, we must thank her properly.”
It was late at night, and Carter needed rest, so Zachary and Lucian left the study. On the way, Zachary glanced at Lucian and asked, “Lucian, what are you thinking?”
Lucian slowly clenched his fists and said, “Dad, I don’t intend to marry Penelope.”
Zachary asked, “Is it because of that woman named Allison?”
Lucian didn’t answer that question and instead said, “Dad, it’s late at night. You should go back and rest.”
Zachary said, “The public opinion is not in your favor right now.” He looked at Lucian’s back and continued, “Although these opinions won’t have a significant impact on the Lindberg Corporation, they will affect you. Lindberg Corporation has been running well under your leadership. The pressure from public opinion is not friendly to you.”
The Lindberg family was filled with complex emotions and conflicting interests, and people were paying attention everywhere. Lucian was well aware of that.
“Dad, I understand.” Lucian said.
Zachary nodded in agreement, “That’s good, Lucian. Even if you like that woman, you should marry Penelope first.”
The man’s fingers tightened, and his voice became tense, “I will.”
Zachary’s gaze became sharp, “Do you think this accident is related to the Flanagan family?”
It was evident that Penelope was the biggest victim of this accident, but she was also the biggest beneficiary.
Having been in the business world for many years, Zachary could discern that. He had never really paid attention to the Flanagan family before. The Lindberg family was powerful and considered the largest family in Northfield, while the Flanagan family was just a small household. He was surprised when his son said he wanted to marry Penelope.
Lucian said, “Under this pressure, if I don’t marry her, Lindberg Corporation might temporarily turn away from me. George is cunning, and he would be the beneficiary. But if I marry her, the beneficiary would be the Flanagan family.” The man’s voice paused, and his gaze became dark, “I’m more inclined to think it was the Flanagan family’s doing.”
Zachary furrowed his brows, “But why would they do that? What does the Flanagan family gain from losing the child?”
“Dad, you’re right to ask. Why would she do this?” The man said, “Perhaps, the child she’s carrying isn’t mine.”
Zachary was shocked, “What are you saying? Lucian, didn’t you say she saved you?”
“She did save me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the child she’s carrying is mine. I’ve had doubts about it all along and I’ve been waiting for the DNA test after she gives birth. Unexpectedly, something like this happened. I carefully reviewed the surveillance footage before the incident, and the position where the chandelier fell happened to be where mother was passing by.” Lucian said.
Lucian pursed his lips slightly, “Dad, how is that possible? How did the person behind this accurately determine mother’s position? There was no room for error. If mother had avoided the chandelier when she turned back, would this accident have happened? But what
I saw…”
