With tears brimming in his eyes, Adrian said, "Your dad was a stand-up guy. Always steady and meticulous, which is why Connor thought highly of him and took him in as an adopted son. He and Christopher had known each other since they were knee-high to a grasshopper and were like brothers. But Christopher was heartless. He knew the truth about everything, but after your father's death, he treated you and your mom like dirt. He knew Joshua died for him. That car crash was supposed to be his end, but Joshua took it for him! He knew all of it!"
"Adrian, don't get yourself worked up."
"Ms. Zimmer, I really owe your family an apology."
Adrian's voice choked up. He was thin and his hair was white. His eyes were red and swollen. He was only in his forties, but he looked like an old man.
"During your father's car crash, I was driving the truck..."
Allison's mind went blank.
"Right after the accident, I went to see your mother. I told her everything I knew, and then I turned myself in. I spent ten years in jail, in agony." Adrian had been released from jail just six months ago.
She began to tremble, "My father and brother..."
"Ms. Zimmer, I really owe you an apology."
Suddenly, Adrian fell to his knees in front of her, crying.
Allison began to choke up and was unable to speak.
Adrian continued, "I despised Christopher. He was your mother's boyfriend, but he ditched her for Leah just for the glitz and glam. Your mom and Leah were related, but their backgrounds couldn't be more different. Leah's dad was a real estate tycoon, while your parents were just ordinary workers. When Christopher realized marrying Leah would be more beneficial, he dumped your mom."
"Yes." Adrian had given it to Grace right after he got the money.
But to his surprise, she hadn't touched a dime in ten years.
Because that money was the price of her husband’s and son's lives.
"Ms. Zimmer, can you tell me how Grace is doing now?"
"She's sick; life's been tough..." Facing the man who had cost her father and brother, Allison couldn't find it in her to hate him. "Adrian, my mom's been locked up in a mental hospital by Leah. She had a kidney transplant, but she's been in a coma because of severe rejection."
"What?"
