"Allison, you're back. I've been looking everywhere for you; why's your phone off?" Three minutes later, Jason showed up.
Allison grinned. "Maybe it's out of juice."
Jason glanced at the cards on the table and pulled up a chair. "Were you guys playing cards?"
Allison gave a small smile and said, "Just a game."
"What game?"
Before Allison could answer, a girl from the other side chimed in, "Nathalie brought a deck of cards. There's a pair of Ace of Hearts; whoever draws them has to kiss for two minutes." The girl paused for effect, her gaze landing on Jason's handsome face, her cheeks flushed. "In the end, it was Allison and Luca who drew the Ace of Hearts."
Jason, mid-sip, almost choked on his drink. What? Luca and Allison?
The girl continued, "Luca chose to down two bottles of wine instead, and that's how the game ended."
Jason breathed a sigh of relief, typical of Luca.
He was overthinking; even if it was a game, Luca wouldn't do such a thing, especially with his fiancée Penelope around.
"Hey, did you hear? That's Allison, the maid from Penelope's house."
"How can a maid sit with us?"
"This maid is something else; look at her, sitting next to Jason; wonder what she did to get his attention."
"I can't believe Jason would fall for a lowly maid."
"You guys are underestimating this maid." Sabina whispered, "She even tried to seduce Lucian."
"Really? But Lucian is Penelope's fiancée."
"Penelope is too kind to keep such a maid."
Allison took a bite of her steak, chewing slowly, seemingly unbothered. "I won't."
After watching Allison slowly finish her steak, Jason said, "Let's go; I'll grill some veggies for you over there."
Lily watched Jason roll up his sleeves and grill meat and veggies for Allison, feeling sour. "I just don't get what's so great about this maid, a poor, country bumpkin who knows nothing about the world. Look at her, dressed in common street clothes." How did Jason fall for her?
"Chill out, Lily," her friends tried to comfort her.
Lily's family was pretty well off—not as rich as the Brummetts or the Lindberghs, but still a well-known heiress. She was naturally upset that she couldn't compare to a maid.
"Did you hear? This maid even had an abortion in high school."
"What?"
The crowd gasped, and everyone started buzzing, throwing glances at Allison from time to time.
