It couldn't be that simple.
Emma quickly texted Allison, "Penelope's in the hospital."
Two minutes passed without a response from Allison.
Emma didn't hesitate and called her, "Allie, don't rush over just yet. Penelope's here."
This smelled like a setup.
Penelope was definitely up to no good.
On the other end, Allison was silent for a good two minutes before saying, "Well, isn't that a coincidence? I've been meaning to catch up with Penelope myself."
After hanging up, Allison's gaze lingered on her phone screen, her lips curling into a smirk as she dialed another number, "Hey, is this Adrian? Grace just fainted, she's at Second Street Hospital. If you're free, you might wanna drop by. Doctor says it doesn't look too good." Without further ado, she ended the call.
Tom was behind the wheel, hesitating before breaking the silence, "Is Ms. Penelope causing you trouble? If so, I can report it to Mr. Lindberg. He'll handle it."
"Handle it?" Allison chewed over the words with a hint of irony. Her makeup-free face was still stunning as she offered a faint smile, yet her eyes remained still as a pond. "His fiancée? What's he gonna do, really? Protect Penelope, of course. He'd just tell me to ignore her, or maybe he'd take a day off to cheer me up. What can he really do? Call off the engagement with Penelope?"
Was she supposed to be grateful for Mr. Lindberg sparing a day for her, like she was some caged canary?
Allison felt stifled.
She rolled down the car window, letting the fresh air pour in.
It was a welcome relief.
Allison was a storm of controversy, and anything about her was sure to trend. Even now, without a hit to her name, she was a tabloid favorite.
As Allison approached, Sophie felt a chill. The air around Allison was frosty. She lowered her camera and stood up straight, but before she knew it, Allison nodded at Tom, who swiftly grabbed the camera from her hands.
Sophie was stunned, letting out a shrill, "What do you think you're doing? Give it back!"
Hearing the commotion, Emma rushed over, "Allie?"
Allison fixed a cold stare on Sophie, "Which rag are you with? Which magazine?"
Sophie was silent, glaring at Tom, "Give me back my camera, or I'll call the cops. Hand it over now, or I'm reporting you for theft!"
