Jack Hughes leaned back on his hospital bed, a wry smile spreading across his face as he addressed his visitor. “Heard from Bryan you dropped by to see me?”
Emma nodded, concern etched on her face. “Yeah, how are you holding up?”
“I’m hanging in there. Should be out of here in a few days.”
“Why the rush? You should rest up a little longer, listen to the docs.”
“It doesn’t matter where I recuperate. I need to get back to Blue Club; a whole pile of mess is waiting for me there.”
Emma bit her lip, worry creasing her brow. “What exactly happened? Did you cross someone?”
Hughes let out a soft sigh, a hint of resignation in his voice. “To be honest, I haven't got a clue. I'm the kind of guy who keeps his nose clean, so why would I get mixed up in anything shady?”
Knowing Hughes was dodging the question, Emma couldn’t help but chuckle.
Caught off guard by her laughter, Hughes paused for a moment before speaking again. “Did Ms. Lauren call me up just to shoot the breeze?”
“What else?” Emma cleared her throat. “Actually, I do need your help with something…”
“Say no more. If it’s Emma Lauren asking, consider it done. What’s the deal? Even with this banged-up body of mine, I’d crawl over to help you out.”
“Can you crack a password? For a camera memory card.”
“That's it?”
“Yep, that’s it.”
“Piece of cake.” For Hughes, it was no big deal.
“Oh... So you’re going all-in for the job?”
Emma rolled her eyes. “Allison!”
“Got it, sis. Keep calling me that and you'll age me prematurely. If you’re going all-in, don't bother coming back tonight. It’s not safe to travel late, and you can just crash at his place. If you’re too tired in the morning, don't bother showing up at Epic Entertainment; I'll cover for you until noon!”
Emma laughed and sent a playful emoji back to Allison as the elevator doors slid open.
Out of energy? She was brimming with it. Hughes was the one laid up; flipping over was probably a challenge for him.
When she reached the hospital room, she found Bryan standing guard by the door. He yawned, “I was wondering why I got the boot. Turns out it was to clear space for you. Well, I'm off to the hotel. It’s just across from here. Give me a buzz when you're done…”
Emma was here strictly for business, to get Hughes to crack the password and prepare the video for tomorrow’s release. But the way everyone was acting, it was as if she was planning some illicit rendezvous with Hughes…
