"Who said I was your girlfriend? I don't remember agreeing to that," Emma retorted with a touch of irritation.
"Oh really? Backing out now, are we? Remember when you visited me in the hospital? We shared a bed," Hughes teased, a mischievous grin playing on his lips.
"When did that happen? Must have slipped my mind," Emma shot back, pretending to forget.
"Alright, if you don't believe me, I'll just buy a plane ticket to Silvertown right now," Hughes joked, his voice dropping to a playful growl, "Big sis Lauren."
The 'Big sis Lauren' comment hit Emma like a ton of bricks, leaving her completely flustered.
Her cheeks flushed a deep crimson, and her heart raced. "Don't call me that..."
Just hearing him say it made Emma feel like she was losing control.
She clutched her chest, her heart pounding as if it wanted to leap out.
On the other end of the phone, Hughes' voice was carried by a soft breeze, "I've been missing you, Lauren."
Sitting on the edge of her bed, Emma could only murmur, "Yeah." Truth be told, she missed him too.
For the first time, Emma found herself longing for a man. For the first time, his image had planted itself firmly in her heart. Whenever she had a spare moment, she'd find herself daydreaming. She resolved that as soon as the shoot was over, she'd head straight to Northfield to visit Azure.
Was he fully recovered from his injuries? Had there been any lasting effects?
Her thoughts were a jumbled mess, "I... I miss you too."
After a few seconds of silence, without waiting for a response, Emma added, "As soon as I get a break here, I'll come to Northfield to see you. How's your injury? All healed?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
"Make sure you rest up. Don't push yourself too hard. And stay out of Robbie's mess—it's way too complicated, and we can't take on those people."
Paige was practically bubbling with excitement, "I've heard the fortune-telling at Mount Providence is spot on. Let's give it a try!"
Emma glanced at the steps before them, "Mount Providence is halfway up the mountain—that's over fifteen hundred steps we've got to climb. What kind of fortune are you after, Paige? Love life?" she teased.
Paige blushed, "Is it that obvious?"
"Do you have someone special, Paige?" Allison chuckled. "You've got a crush and you didn't even tell us? If you end up getting married, I'll have to give you a fat wedding gift." Aside from Paige being Patty's insider, she was genuinely good at her job, taking excellent care of Allison's dietary and personal needs and always professional.
"It's a senior from college; I've liked him for a long time. To my surprise, he reached out to me a few days ago... I was quite shocked."
Allison encouraged her, "Paige, you're amazing too. Go for it!"
"I just don't feel like I'm in his league. I'm just an ordinary worker in the entertainment industry. He's become a pretty successful screenwriter, and the gap between us feels pretty huge." Paige's agreement to keep an eye on Allison wasn't just about the money Patty offered; it was Patty's promise to promote her to the position of executive agent for a newly-signed artist.
