Jason sighed, the usual resignation in his voice as he spoke to his mom, "Mom, just do what you think is best."
"Jason, you need to understand something. The Brummett family didn't get through this rough patch solely because of the Lindbergs' help. The Gu family played a big part too," his mother said, her tone serious.
Cora seemed particularly taken with a certain Miss Gu. "That Gu family girl, she's sweet, and quite pretty too. From the moment I saw her, I thought she'd be perfect for you."
Seeing her son's lack of interest, Cora decided not to push it. He had agreed to the blind date, and she believed things would naturally fall into place.
After the financial turmoil that had rocked Brummett Enterprises, Jason had stepped up quickly, taking the reins with impressive resolve.
She knew things needed to progress naturally now. Jason had matured a lot; pushing him wouldn’t work anymore. With that thought, she left.
The wind scattered the ashes on the ground as Jason exhaled a cloud of smoke, momentarily hiding his face.
When he left half a year ago, he thought he'd return and openly pursue Allison. But now, Jason realized he had to let go.

Lucian walked into the study to find Penelope grinding ink for Miranda.
She always made time to be with the Lindberg matriarch whenever she could. It was rare to see Lucian, so she clung to Miranda as her strategy.
Penelope's face lit up when she saw Lucian. "Lucian, you're here."
He walked in with an unreadable expression. "Can you step out for a moment? I need to talk to Mom alone."
Her smile instantly froze. She had finally caught a moment with Lucian, and his first request was for her to leave.
Biting her lip, she glanced at Miranda. Ever since Lucian entered, Miranda's attention had been solely on him, showing no intention of keeping Penelope there.
Reluctantly, she stepped out.
Miranda gathered her dried sheets of calligraphy. "Go ahead."
"Did you go see Allison?"
Miranda hesitated at Lucian's question.
"Is that why you're confronting me?"
"That's not what I mean, Mom. But you know I care about Allison. Why put her in a tough spot?"
Miranda's expression darkened. "Put her in a tough spot? She was the one who demanded ten million to break up with you. Now that she's got the money, is she planning to back out? By the way you're acting, she must have complained, right? Did she bad-mouth me, trying to drive a wedge between us?"
"She didn't say a word, nor did she try to pit us against each other. In fact, she asked me to understand you," Lucian said, unable to understand his mother's strong prejudice against Allison. "Allison is a good person. You'd see that if you spent some time with her."
Miranda retorted, "I have no intention of spending time with her. I used to think she was just ambitious, maybe a bit scheming, but now I see I was wrong."
