When will she be able to wake up?” Damian asked, dropping his phone on the table in front of him.
“That, I can’t say. Let’s wait and watch her.”
“Till when?” he asked.
“And you said there isn’t love between you two?” Jack raised an eyebrow. “I don’t believe that.”
“I don’t care what you think, Jack. I don’t love her, and I will never love her,” Damian muttered.
“Okay. You should stick to your promise,” Jack said, rising to his feet. “You both had an agreement and a contract for one year of marriage, right?”
“Yes.” Damian wondered why Jack was asking this all of a sudden. “What are you asking me this for?”
“Well, I can ask to marry her after your marriage contract is over,” Jack smirked. Damian clenched his fists. Was Jack trying to test him? He knew that he was in love with someone else.
“You’re joking, right?”
“Do I look like someone who is joking, Damian?”
Without giving it a second thought, Damian responded, “Okay, do as you like. I don’t care.”
“Really?” Jack inquired. “Are you sure?”
Damian sighed, already frustrated by Jack’s presence and his incessant questions. “Yes, go ahead.”
“Okay. Don’t regret it.”
“I know,” Damian uttered. They were still talking when Jack’s phone beeped. He checked the caller ID: Vera. Jack looked at Damian, whose expression had turned cold. The call rang again before Jack answered.
“Hello,” Jack said.
Damian could hear Vera’s voice, still innocent and familiar. “Are you there, Jack?” she asked, as Jack remained
silent.
“What’s up, Vera? How are you?” Jack finally responded.
“I’ve been trying to reach Damian, but his number wasn’t reachable,” she said. Jack clenched his fists. He had thought he could handle it, thought he could move on from Vera, but hearing her voice made him realize he was fooling himself. Vera had always loved Damian, and no one could change that.
“Yes,” he replied. “Do you want to speak with him?”
“Yes, please pass the phone to him.”
“Okay.” Jack removed the phone from his ear, intending to hand it over, but Damian rejected it.
“He’s busy,” Jack said.
He could hear her sighing on the other end. She must be hurting,‘ Jack thought.
“I know he’s there,” Vera said, but Jack interrupted.
“I didn’t say he wasn’t here, Vera. Don’t get me wrong.”
“I know, but.why isn’t he taking the phone from you?” she asked. “Why? I missed him, and I wanted to hear his

voice,”
Jack wouldn’t relent. He hated that Vera was hurt because of Damian.
“He’s busy,” he lied.
“Busy?” she scoffed over the phone. “He’s too busy to pick up my calls? I know he blocked me as well.”
“You don’t have to think like that. Damian would never block you,” Jack corrected. “He wouldn’t do something like that.”
“You think so?” Vera asked. “And Jack, is it true that Damian is married?”
“Ha! Yes,” Jack replied almost immediately. Jack hoped that seeing the news would make Vera finally give up on Damian and see how much he loved her.
“What!” She screamed, almost hurting his left ear. “What did you just say?”
“You asked me if he was married, and I answered truthfully”
“I can’t believe it. She must be a bitch trying to charm my Damian,” Vera said. Jack couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Before he could respond, Damian snatched the phone from him.
“Even if she is a bitch, she’s still better than you, and she’s my wife,” he warned. “I don’t want anyone talking badly about my wife, not even you.‘
Before Vera could respond, the line went dead. Damian handed the phone back to Jack, who was visibly angry.
“Why did you do that? You shouldn’t have talked to Vera like that.”
With his hands in his pockets, Damian walked to the door without answering. He opened it and was about to leave when he turned around.
“Jack, since my wife is stable now, I think you should leave,” he said before exiting the room.
Jack ran after Damian, questioning his behavior toward Vera.
“You’re so nosy, Jack.”
“You know that I’ve always loved Vera, and I hate seeing her hurt,” Jack whispered. The servants greeted them as they passed, heading to the sitting room where they both took their seats.
“I know,” Damian muttered. “I know you love her, but what about her? Did she love you, Jack?”
“Sir, this is your tea,” Joy said, serving them both.
“Thank you, Joy.” They took their cups from her.
“She didn’t know about my feelings. I haven’t confessed how I feel to her.”
“Hmm!” Damian said, sipping his tea. “Do you really think she didn’t know about your feelings towards her?”
“Yes, she didn’t.”
“Haha! I’ve always known you to be slow, but knowing that you’re also a fool saddens me,” he began. “How could she not know, Jack? Vera is aware of your feelings for her but chooses to ignore them and take advantage of you.” Jack dropped his cup of tea, his eyes burning. The sweet and lovely Jack suddenly turned cold.

“You know it, man. You know it, but you choose to ignore the red flags. She’s just using you.”
“Enough. I won’t accept this behavior towards her,” Jack warned. “She isn’t using me. I was at fault for not telling her how I feel.”
“Okay. Then tell me, what will happen when you finally confess to her?” Damian asked, a sly smile creeping onto his lips. “Will she accept your love?” Given Vera’s obsession with Damian over the years, Jack knew he had no chance.
“No answer. She is your friend, not mine,” Damian added. She’s only using you to get to me. Can’t you see?”
“Damian.” Jack gritted his teeth. “You’re married.”
“You don’t have to remind me. Even if I weren’t married, I wouldn’t date or marry that kind of girl. She isn’t as innocent as you think.”
“Enough. I don’t want to listen to you anymore.”
“I’m sorry if you feel that way, Jack. I’m just telling the truth.”
