When Lysander received the apologies from his two boys, the dark clouds that had been hanging over his face parted like curtains, and a warm smile broke through like sunlight after a storm. His lips twitched in a near imperceptible smile; he wasn't even aware he was doing it.
"It's late, time for bed," he said, his voice carrying a natural tone with an undertone of authority not to be questioned.
The children, overjoyed by the news from their mother about the upcoming addition to the family, felt a deep sense of security. They obediently headed to their bedrooms for the night.
Though Thalassa had initially intended to tuck them in, to her tender heart's surprise, they insisted she rest early instead. They made promises to look after their future sibling and reassured her that they could sleep on their own.
After seeing her children to their rooms and softly closing each door, Thalassa turned and nearly collided with the tall, shadowy figure of Lysander standing silently behind her. She caught her breath with a start, patting her chest.
"What are you doing standing there? You scared me," she said.
Lysander naturally took her hand, "Time for bed," and led her upstairs.
Thalassa was surprised; he had waited in the living room all this time just to take her to bed?
She didn't resist, but as they reached the door of the master bedroom, she paused. Lysander looked back, "Something else on your mind?"
Despite the deception she had played on him and the lingering irritation he felt, he had seen the genuine motherly love she radiated towards their children today. Even with their issues, she upheld his image as a good father, refraining from speaking ill of him to the kids.
This softened Lysander's anger considerably, and his gaze upon her became gentler.
"No, nothing," she said. "I'm pregnant, and the pregnancy is delicate. I need peace. I'll rest in the guest room next door, to avoid complications." Without waiting for a response, Thalassa headed to the next room.
Her expression calm, her gaze detached, as if her decision was truly for the sake of the child and not a reluctance to share a room with him.
Lysander watched her enter the guest room and close the door without a word.
