Even as he stumbled into the elevator, he didn't recognize that the person inside was Georgia. His vision blurred, he merely registered the presence of someone, assuming it was just a random stranger.
With Hertha in tow, he entered the elevator and pressed the button for the floor indicated on his keycard.
Once they reached their floor, he led Hertha out of the elevator, his steps unsteady as he searched for their room number.
Georgia followed behind him, watching his struggle and how he clung to Hertha. It twisted her heart like a string being pulled taut, the pain leaving her breathless.
Jealousy turned her eyes a fiery red.
She had never seen Alaric so concerned for a woman, treating her with such precious care.
Even though he was so drunk he seemed seconds from collapsing, he was forcing himself to stay upright, concentrating hard to maintain consciousness, holding Hertha close as he staggered with her towards the room.
Alaric must be worried that if he passed out, some villain might take advantage of Hertha!
When had he ever shown such concern for a woman?
At least, he had never cared for Georgia that way. He had always been cool and distant with her.
And it irked Georgia to no end. She was clearly more attractive than Hertha. She came from a more distinguished family, had a more refined air, and even a better figure.
Why did Alaric never give her a second glance? Why was he always so attentive to Hertha, who seemed so plainly compared with him?
Alaric had agreed to discuss engagement plans with her just the day before, but that was because they ran into Hertha at the restaurant! Alaric became distant afterward, eventually leaving Georgia and the two elders behind.
"Yes, it's me. How did you get like this?" Georgia asked with feigned concern, glancing briefly at Hertha. "Did Ms. Kensington join you for drinks?"
"Just help me find room 2203," Alaric mumbled, still not forgetting his priority to ensure Hertha was settled in safely, even through his drunken haze.
"It's this way. I'll help," Georgia said, guiding Alaric along.
When they arrived at the door, Georgia took the keycard from Alaric's hand and opened the door, helping both him and Hertha into the room.
Summoning the last of his strength, Alaric helped Hertha to the bed and gently laid her down. As he did so, his own strength gave out, and he collapsed onto the bed beside her.
"Alaric, this is a double room. You take this bed," Georgia said quickly, seeing Alaric fall next to Hertha, his body landing on top of her. She hurried to pull Alaric away.
