But ever since Leopold passed away, he never showed up again.
Atticus had even looked up the meaning of death on the internet.
The little ones began to grasp a deeper understanding of death, knowing that when someone dies, they leave forever.
Now, their beloved Grandma Evelyn, who loved them most, had also died.
They could still hear Grandma's voice echoing in their ears.
But they knew they would never see her again, never taste her cooking and never hear her story-telling.
They would never be able to learn how to make paper airplanes from her again.
It was as if the sky above had darkened with their sorrow.
Thalassa, clutching a black and white photo of Evelyn, led the way.
Hearing the children's cries, tears cascaded down her face like a torrential downpour.
She was now someone without a mother, never again to act spoiled in front of her, never to hear Evelyn urge her to get married.
The funeral was held in the small town of Hollowbrook, where everyone who knew Evelyn came to pay their respects.
Evelyn's sister, Astrid Pendleton, was so overcome with grief that she fainted several times.
Astrid, already suffering from arthritis and bearing immense sorrow, could barely stand. She couldn't make it through the entire funeral, even though it was only a short walk from their home to the grave site. Isabella Everhart's mother had to support her all the way to the graveside.
Evelyn's gravestone had already been erected, the epitaph inscribed.
Astrid was heartbroken, weeping at the base of the stone, "Sis, why'd you have to leave your beloved daughter and grandchildren behind? If you didn't want city life, you could always come back and farmed with me. Oh, sis, now even you're gone, how am I supposed to go on alone..."
