Now Zephyr found Thalassa bargaining her soul to a man well into his fifties, all to save Lysander. It wasn't something he'd thought she could never do.
Thalassa's pupils contracted sharply, feeling a sting of offense. She fought to keep the hurt and rage from surfacing, though her voice still trembled with indignation as she spoke.
"Dr. Funke is looking for a disciplined, available apprentice with a keen ability to learn, someone to pass on the art of medicine. He also wants a lively, witty woman to share his life with. Which criteria do you suppose I fit, Zephyr?" Thalassa challenged, chin held high.
Before Zephyr could respond, she continued, her irritation clear, "I agreed to find Dr. Funke a suitable apprentice, and to introduce him to potential partners until he finds satisfaction. Those are the terms I agreed upon! Zephyr, don’t you dare define me with your narrow-minded judgments!"
"Don't fool yourself into thinking that just because you've found a doctor to treat Lysander, you're fit to marry into the Sinclair family. I will never allow a fickle woman like you to become part of it!" Zephyr, stung by Thalassa's retort, huffed angrily, leaving a biting remark before storming out.
His promise to let Thalassa care for Lysander was born from necessity, given Lysander's inability to look after himself. It was clear to him that she was the most suitable caregiver.
The intimacy required for such care was delicate.
Lysander, when conscious, couldn't stand the touch of another woman. In his comatose state, letting a stranger tend to him was risky—not only due to unfamiliarity with his routines but also for fear of triggering a stress response that could worsen his condition.
The mere breath of life he held could be extinguished by such a reaction, a loss too great to risk.
Zephyr's insistence on Thalassa's care was driven by fear of losing Lysander, not an acceptance of her relationship with him.
