The next morning, after finishing her breakfast, Thalassa received a call from Joshua Whitman.

"Go home for lunch today," Joshua said on the phone.

"Go home? To which home?" Thalassa asked, puzzled.

"Back to the Whitman family. Your sister's back in town, and Matilda too. They'd like to have lunch with you," Joshua replied with a seriousness that matched his words.

The so-called sister Rosalind was the child Joshua had with his current wife, Matilda.

It had been three years since Thalassa and Joshua had recognized each other, and he had taken her to meet the Whitman family only once before, introducing her to this new set of relatives.
