Rosalind was about to stand up and leave when Joshua said, “Your class isn’t until eight, and it’s only six now. Stay home and rest. I’ll step out.”
With that, he cast a worried glance towards Matilda and exited the living room, tactfully leaving the space for Rosalind and her.
“Rosalind, let your dad go out. You stay home and get an extra hour of rest,” Matilda said as she approached, wrapping her arm around Rosalind’s with a mother’s tender concern.
When Rosalind was born, Joshua was over the moon with his daughter. And because she was as beautiful and charming as a picture, she quickly became the darling of the Whitman family.
Matilda also adored her daughter, thinking of her as a delicate little marshmallow, so endearing that she longed to give her the very best the world had to offer.
Rosalind looked at Matilda with her intelligent, pleading eyes. “Do you really think you can convince Dad to help me win over Lysander?”
“Absolutely, don’t you worry about your stubborn old dad. A little pillow talk tonight and he’ll come around. Plus, with Zephyr on our side, it’s a sure thing. Zephyr wouldn’t have called me to share the news that Lysander will wake up within two months if he didn’t think it was certain,” Matilda assured her with confidence.
Originally, Rosalind had been studying abroad, where Matilda had looked after her, occasionally flying back to Starhaven to see Joshua. It had been a year of constant travel.
Sending Rosalind abroad was Matilda’s way of abandoning any hopes for an alliance with the Sinclair family through marriage. With Lysander in a coma for three years, it was likely he’d be incapacitated for life. Matilda would never allow her daughter to marry a man who was practically a living ghost, and Rosalind herself had no desire for such a marriage.
So after two years of waiting in Starhaven with no change in Lysander’s condition, Matilda had arranged for Rosalind to study abroad.
It was an escape from the proposed marriage to the Sinclair family.
Then Zephyr called Matilda with the news of a doctor, a miracle worker who personally guaranteed that Lysander would awaken within two months.
Upon hearing that Lysander would soon recover, Matilda realized that Rosalind could become Mrs. Sinclair, a position just shy of royalty! She hastily arranged for Rosalind to drop her international studies, transferred her courses back home, and rushed back to Starhaven.
