Alaric knew his top priority was earning Hertha’s forgiveness. If he could win her back, everything else would fall into place. But without her approval, even moving heaven and earth—or his entire family—wouldn't make a difference.
But how could he explain this to his grandparents?
After mulling it over, a forced smile crept onto Alaric's face as he turned to his grandparents and said, "Grandma, Grandpa, I know you mean well wanting to help me out, but Hertha's pretty mad at me right now. If we stir things up with her kids, I'm afraid she might never forgive me..."
Alaric decided honesty was the best policy with his grandparents. After all, sincerity always wins the day with them.
Remington and Beatrice exchanged a look, a mix of seriousness and surprise on Remington's face as he asked, "Are you saying you promised Hertha not to tell the Falconer family about the child?"
They were wise, seasoned by life’s many trials. A single sentence from Alaric, and they grasped the underlying implications.
Alaric sighed and nodded.
Beatrice, taken aback, said, "That girl really is something. Most people would use a child as leverage to climb the social ladder, but she doesn't even want the Falconers to know the child exists. Does she not want to marry you?"
Remington added, "She's got spunk. Remember when Drunken Butterfly tried to bribe her with two million to leave you, Alaric? Her actions completely took us by surprise then, too."
"Exactly, when most girls would show their 'loyalty' by turning down the money to prove their love, she took the two million and claimed she played you, avoiding any losses!" Beatrice recalled, highlighting Hertha's uniqueness.
"So, you both understand she's not an easy woman to handle. Let's not cross her boundaries, or I might really lose her for good," Alaric pleaded with a hint of desperation in his voice.
