Cayden swept his gaze over Avery indifferently. She was dressed in a figure-hugging costume that wrapped around her curvy body, revealing her long and fair legs.
With her long, loose hair draped over her back, her face looked exquisite and neat, and her eyes were like the stars that dazzled in the night sky. The shade of lipstick on her lips was faint, and she wore a scarf around her neck that made her look slightly dainty. Her look suggested to him that she was covering the hickeys from the night before.
At that moment, she looked as stunning as a blooming cherry blossom.
Right then, Cayden could not help but feel a surge of warm flow in his lower abdomen as he recalled how alluring Avery was when she was pinned under him the night before.
However, when he thought of her foolish behaviors, the man pressed his lips into a thin line, and his gaze grew sharp.
Avery was so intimidated by Cayden's reaction that she dared not let out a breath, for she was too afraid to infuriate him again. What if he refuses to save Nina?
The next instant, Avery let out a soft cough and placed the documents on his table. “Mr. Moore, these are the documents you need.”
As Avery caught a whiff of the smell of the mushroom soup on the table, her heart wrenched for a moment.
So, Nicole has already gotten so close to him? She even brought him the mushroom soup personally...
“What's wrong? You were just calling my name last night, yet you forgot about it after getting out of bed?” Cayden felt his anger rise in him as he saw how she was shunning him.
Avery was stupefied by his mockery. Fixing her gaze on his cold and handsome face, she reminded, “It's working hour now. Mr. Moore, you've always been professional, so I believe you wouldn't want to bring your personal matter to work.”
Cayden narrowed his eyes, and there was a stern look in his gaze that vanished in mere seconds. “Avery Rumpley, do you know what you're talking about?”
Avery had been with him for a long time, so she fathomed his temper pretty well.
She knew that it was a sign of him losing his temper. Despite not knowing how she had triggered him, she could only let out a soft sigh helplessly before she decided to get serious with him. “I don't want to argue with you, and we can deal with the matter between us later. I only wish to ask you for a favor today...”
Just then, a strange silence ensued, and Cayden's domineering aura made Avery feel suffocated.
Cayden took a deep drag on the cigarette and asked aloofly, “What is it?”
Avery bit her bottom lip so hard that it almost bled. “I'm begging you. Please save Nina.”
Hearing that, Cayden stared intently at her, his gaze cold.
Strands of hair rested on his forehead, and he looked calm yet intractable.
He flicked his cigarette and questioned with a hint of mockery in his tone, “Since you hate me so much, why are you asking me for help then? Avery, do you feel that awful being with me?”
Cayden was extremely displeased at how she was staying away from him as if he was a vicious person.
He was so used to having her depending on him and clinging to him. Hence, he could hardly accept that she was keeping a distance from him.
Even though he knew that he should not speak to her in that manner, he could not stop the rage in him from welling up when he was faced with her.
Avery clasped her hands together tightly as she requested softly, “Even if it isn't for me, seeing as Nina is Trident Group's employee, you must save her... She only got caught by Dylan Musk because of me. Dylan threatened me to sleep with him for a night or else he would get a few men to harm Nina. He sent many photos and videos of Nina to me, and I saw how helpless and desperate she was, but there was nothing I could do. She is my best friend, and she got dragged into the matter because of me. How could I just watch her get defiled by someone else?”
Tears streamed down Avery's cheeks as she said that.
She covered her mouth, trying not to lose control in front of him, but it did not seem to work. Her tears were flowing uncontrollably.
“So, did you agree to Dylan's request?” Cayden suddenly stubbed out the cigarette and rose to his feet. He was staring at Avery like a beast that was on the verge of exploding.
Avery took a deep breath and clenched her fist. “Yes.”
Just then, Cayden threw a punch on the table furiously, and the documents on it fell and scattered all over the floor.
He was trying his best to suppress the myriad of emotions surging within him while he chided, “Are you out of your mind? Do you think you can solve this by going there yourself? He is a jerk, and he will do anything! You're merely a defenseless woman! The nerve of you to go there on your own. I don't know if you're bold or foolish. Couldn't you just call me for help?”
A bitter smile crept over Avery's face as she revealed reluctantly, “Do you think I wouldn't call you for help in that kind of situation? I kept calling you, but your phone was switched off. I was worried sick, yet I couldn't get ahold of you. You have no idea how fearful and hopeless I felt at that moment... Nina is my best friend, and time was running out. I couldn't just leave her when her life was at stake!”
Avery could not call the police either, as Dylan had threatened to end Nina's life if she dared to make a police report.
She could not put Nina's life at risk, but she had no other choice. In the end, she could only give in out of despair.
Right then, Cayden suddenly recalled that he had received multiple missed calls after switching on his phone as soon as he got off the plane. At that moment, he thought that she had missed him and did not give it another thought.
Only then did he know that Avery had called him to ask for help. What the hell have I done? Not only did I not believe her, but I also misunderstood her when I saw the scene of her being intimate with Dylan.
At the thought of that, he instantly felt a wave of overwhelming guilt and pain.
“I'm sorry. I-I didn't know.” Cayden walked toward Avery, and his eyes met hers. Then, he tentatively reached out his hands to hold her slim figure in his embrace.
His heart ached when he saw how skinny she had become. The man brushed his thin lips against her teary eye and apologized to her repetitively.
However, Avery pushed him away forcefully.
She was disappointed at what had happened the night before and how he had treated her.
In a cold voice, Avery said, “Nina is in Aaron's hands right now, and I have no clue about her current situation. Mr. Moore, I hope you can save her as soon as possible. I'll remember your kindness for my whole life.”
As soon as Avery finished her words, she walked out without a hint of hesitation.
A complicated yet sorrowful look filled Cayden's eyes as he watched her leave. He turned around and smashed his clenched fist against the table. Blood was dripping out, yet he did not feel the pain.
He then made a call through the internal phone and summoned Xavier over.
