As soon as Avery arrived at the office building of Trident Group, she heard someone hollering anxiously at the first floor's lobby. “Someone is attempting to commit suicide! This is bad! It's Anthony Xenakis, the owner of the burned-down unit! Help! Someone, please help! He's at the rooftop of Block C!”
In an instant, Avery's face turned ashen. When she was about to follow the informant to the scene, she bumped into Cayden.
“Mr. Xenakis... wants to take his own life! He's at Block C right now!” Avery said nervously. Her mind had already gone blank at that moment.
Cayden grabbed Avery by her wrist and halted her in her tracks. He was worried that the mentally-unstable Anthony would end up hurting innocent people including Avery.
“I know what happened. Calm down, all right? I'll go and handle it. You should stay here.” The man's voice was calm and resolute.
“I won't cause you trouble. I promise. Let's hurry there. I'm serious! Things will get out of control if something bad happens to him,” Avery urged.
Not daring to waste any more time, Cayden could only bring Avery along.
Trident Group had four office buildings—Blocks A, B, C, and D.
Cayden's office was located at Block A, while Anthony was about to jump off the rooftop of Block C. Since the two buildings were quite near, the couple soon arrived at Block C.
Meanwhile, a crowd of onlookers had already gathered downstairs. There were also innumerable reporters taking photos with cameras and camcorders.
At the same time, police officers were there to maintain public order. They had already laid out an air cushion on the ground by then.
Cayden and Avery took the private elevator straight to the highest floor of the building. They then arrived at the rooftop in no time.
Indeed, the suicidal man who was about to jump to his death was Anthony Xenakis—the businessman who had lost his beloved wife and his adorable child overnight.
Anthony was once an elegant-looking, gentle middle-aged man. Yet, at that moment, his face was unshaven, and he looked depressed as he wore a dejected expression.
Standing on the edge of the rooftop, Anthony was only one step away from falling off the building. If he wasn't careful enough, he might die from a fall in the next instant. After all, falling from such a height was enough to shatter all the bones in his body.
“Where is Cayden Moore? I want to see him! I want to see him now!” Anthony clamored while bawling.
Seeing that Anthony was about to fall any moment, Avery grew anxious and wanted to step forward to dissuade him, but Cayden immediately stopped her. “Have you forgotten the promise you've just made? I'll take care of this matter. Just leave it to me and stay right here.”
“We don't have time now. What if he gets too emotional and accidentally falls? Another life would be lost for no reason. I'll go and talk to him. It's best to discuss the matter after he gets down safely,” suggested Avery. Panic-stricken, she had already broken into a cold sweat.
“Leave it to me!” Cayden asserted authoritatively with no room for negotiation.
With that, Avery could only take a step back and allow Cayden to deal with it.
The employees of Trident Group at the scene heaved a sigh of relief when they saw Cayden stepping forward.
Agitated, one of the employees voiced, “Mr. Moore is here, Mr. Xenakis! You can talk to him and let him know if you have any problems. Mr. Moore will seek justice for you!”
“That's right! Please come down, Mr. Xenakis. It's too dangerous to stand there!”
Unexpectedly, Anthony became increasingly emotional when he saw Cayden. The former even inched closer toward the edge, scaring everyone out of their wits.
Filled with despair, Anthony cried his eyes out. It was as though he had been abandoned and left alone in this world.
As tears rolled down his face, he launched into a tirade against Cayden. “You are such a wicked property developer, Cayden Moore! I spent tens of millions buying a property at Chartreuse Garden. I can't believe a high-end residential area developed by Trident Group has poor firefighting facilities and bad property management. My wife and my child were burned to death... They're gone! Since you've destroyed my family, I will make sure to do the same to your reputation!”
“Media reporters are downstairs right now, Mr. Xenakis. I won't stop you if you intend to make the news headline. Just jump off the building. But do you think you can achieve your goal by threatening me with your life? I'm sure you'll die on the spot after jumping off this building. Your face will be unrecognizable after being reduced to a bloody pulp. This is troublesome enough to keep me busy for a while, but that's it! I can easily suppress the news by using some of my connections. It won't take long for me to rebuild Trident Group's reputation. Hmm. What about you? You didn't get to avenge your wife and child and even lost your life. Okay. Go ahead and jump down if you still wish to die,” Cayden uttered in a frosty tone.
At that moment, Avery couldn't believe her ears.
How can he say that to a person seeking death? He should coax Mr. Xenakis down from the ledge, not trigger him with harsh words while maintaining such a calm demeanor. I really can't listen to this anymore. Anthony is already on the verge of breaking down. Why is he still triggering him? Does he really want Anthony to give up on his life?
In a gentle voice, Avery cautiously advised, “Don't listen to him, Mr. Xenakis. The impact of the fall will surely turn you into a pile of mushed flesh. That would be a sorry sight. Why don't you come down first? There will always be a glimmer of hope as long as you're alive and well. Don't you want to avenge your wife and your child? Don't you want to witness the arsonist receive punishment for her deeds? Just let us know what you need, Mr. Xenakis. Now, please get down from there first, okay?”
Anthony gave Avery a once-over at that. Before he could say anything, Cayden's inconsiderate and icy voice sounded again. “Ms. Rumpley, what gives you the right to make a decision on behalf of the higher-ups of Trident Group?”
At times, provocation would work better than coaxing when dissuading a suicidal man. That was also the reason why Cayden tried to threaten Anthony though it was not his usual way of doing things.
In this case, I'll surely provide Anthony with a solution that works best for both parties involved. However, this doesn't mean that he can take the opportunity to threaten me into doing anything. I hate being threatened.
Avery was rendered speechless by Cayden's words. Feeling aggrieved, she questioned, “Mr. Moore, don't you feel sorry for Mr. Xenakis? Do you really want him to die? He is already miserable enough!”
“Miserable people are everywhere. His existence makes no difference to the world.”
“That's outrageous! How could you say such a thing, Cayden Moore? Why can't you show some kindness?”
The employees of Trident Group were taken aback by what was unfolding before their eyes.
However, Avery was the only person who had the guts to talk back to Cayden.
Everyone is here to dissuade Anthony from jumping off the building, so why are Mr. Moore and Avery arguing now? What is happening?
Noticing that Anthony was distracted, some of the onlookers took the opportunity to step forward and pull him down the ledge. Unfortunately, Anthony, who figured out what they were attempting to do, tilted sideways to dodge them and lost his balance in the process. He let out a piercing shriek of terror and fell off the edge of the building.
At that critical juncture, Avery, who was the closest to Anthony, reached out her hand without hesitation. Though she successfully grabbed hold of the plummeting man, gravity pulled them downward, and they fell off the building together.
