Cayden's fever finally subsided after Yuvan came over to prescribe some medicines for him and give him an IV drip treatment.
Avery breathed a sigh of relief.
It had been a hectic day for her. First, the twins fell ill and had to be hospitalized. When they almost recovered, it was Cayden's turn to fall sick. After busying herself to look after her children, she had to take care of her man.
As Avery prepared Cayden's medication, the medicine's strong and pungent smell made her feel sick.
Her stomach turned, and she hurried into the restroom and dry-heaved into the sink, but nothing came out.
After a long while, the nauseating feeling finally subsided.
Right then, a realization dawned on Avery.
She quickly covered her mouth and tried to recall the date of her last period when she remembered Cecelia retching in the restroom and her similar experience when she was pregnant with the twins.
If she remembered correctly, her period for the current month was one week late.
Whenever she made love with Cayden, they always made sure they used protection. However, one night about a month ago, Cayden had forgotten to use protection while the two of them immersed themselves in an extremely intimate session. Avery did not take the morning-after pill either, for those days were her safe period.
My goodness. I'm not pregnant, am I? When Avery realized she might be pregnant with a third child, she was stunned.
With conflicting emotions, she returned to the room.
Cayden was done receiving IV treatment and was in the middle of a conversation with Yuvan. Despite the poor state of his health, he was still holding a stack of financial reports in his hand.
When he saw Avery, he noticed her pale complexion and pulled her into his embrace as she approached the bed. “You must be tired today. Why do you look so pale? Are you feeling okay? Yuvan, give her a checkup.”
Yuvan remained composed like the well-mannered, debonair gentleman that he was. His tapered eyes looked alluring even when he was not smiling.
He whistled and said with a smile, “Say, Avery. What is going on in your family? Your twins were sick, Cayden ran a high fever in the evening, and now it is your turn to fall ill. It's almost New Year. Has your family been plagued by bad luck?”
“Shut up!” Avery snapped.
Cayden shot a deadly glare at Yuvan, silencing the latter.
Yuvan's face instantly took on a solemn expression. “Avery, please hold out your precious arm so I can take your pulse,” he said.
Avery stretched out her slender arm.
Yuvan placed his fingertips on her pulse and felt the faint throbbing. His frivolous gaze was suddenly replaced by a serious one as he frowned.
The solemn look on Yuvan's face made Avery all the more uneasy.
When their eyes met, she saw the indescribably teasing look in his gaze and was confused, for she didn't know what was going on.
“Dr. Sotheby, what is wrong with me?” Avery asked nervously, her eyes filled with anxiousness.
Yuvan had wanted to tease her, but he meekly gave up when Cayden shot him a piercing, threatening glare.
Intimidated by Cayden's deadly stare, Yuvan raised his hands in surrender. “Hey, Cayden. You don't have to stare at me like you're going to kill me, do you? You're scaring me, all right? Well, it's not anything serious. It's just that Avery is pregnant...” he said.
Thud!
The stack of financial reports slipped from Cayden's hands and the papers scattered messily across the room.
Cayden tightened his hold on Avery's waist, his voice shuddering as he looked at Yuvan in disbelief and said, “What did you just say?”
“Yes. Avery is about a month pregnant. You can expect a new addition to the Moore family,” said Yuvan with a mischievous smile as he watched the other man lose his cool in amusement.
Avery, on the other hand, began panicking deep down.
Initially, she and Cayden had planned to have another child after their wedding took place. However, the unexpected arrival of a new life stirred up a whirlwind of emotions within her. Despite her helplessness, she thought it was a sweet blessing that should be cherished.
Cayden took a deep breath. His feeble body due to the fever seemed to have been filled with strength.
His eyes were aglow with joy.
At that moment, all he wanted to do was to hug Avery so tightly that he could merge her into his bones.
Back then, when Avery was pregnant for the first time, he was not as excited as he was now, for Avery's body and soul were not his at that time.
Though the two were secretly in love with each other, their paths have never truly coincided. Besides, to put it bluntly, the relationship between them was purely transactional at that time. Cayden only found out that Avery was pregnant with his twins during the latter's regular doctor visits.
Though he had feelings for her back then, it was nowhere near as deep as it was now.
Cayden had initially planned that after their grand wedding ceremony, he would have another baby with Avery when she was officially his wife.
However, to his surprise, their third kid had arrived so suddenly.
Giddy over the pleasant surprise, Cayden's usually sharp and quick-witted mind was slowing down considerably, and he lost his composure.
His expression then turned solemn as he thought of how overwhelmed Avery must have been after taking care of him and the twins for the whole day.
As such, he carried her over to the bed and made her lie down before covering her with a duvet.
Caressing her delicate face, he was so nervous that he blabbered incoherently, “Avery, you lie down and get some rest. I... I didn't know you were pregnant. Had I known about it earlier, I wouldn't have gotten sick. I'm sorry for keeping you so busy...”
Avery was amused by Cayden's reaction.
He's so funny. Is getting sick or not even optional?
Studies showed pregnant women might become slow-witted, but in her case, her husband was the one who had become slow-witted.
Avery couldn't stand Cayden's overly cautious behavior and mumbled quietly, “I'm just pregnant, that's all. There's no need to make a big fuss out of it. I'm fine, Cayden. Zach and Rory should be awake by now. I'll go check in on them.”
With that, she was about to get out of bed but was soon pinned back down by Cayden.
“You need to get some rest. Be good!” Cayden said, his face sullen.
Cayden's domineering demeanor could be intimidating.
However, there was no denying that his words had rendered Avery touched and happy. After all, it felt good to be appreciated and valued by someone.
Yuvan clicked his tongue in annoyance while he watched the couple displaying affection before a single pringle like him.
He didn't expect that Cayden, who was usually ascetic, would fall head over heels in love with his wife. I can't stand watching this!
With that in mind, he pulled a face at Avery smilingly, making fun of the two lovebirds.
Embarrassed, Avery's face flushed red when Yuvan poked fun at her and Cayden.
Meanwhile, Cayden had absolutely no idea what Yuvan was doing behind his back and was thinking he should provide Avery with the best things in the world, which she deserved. Now that she's pregnant again, I must hold a grand wedding for her that can garner the whole world's attention. Looks like our wedding must be held earlier than planned.
