The CEO Gets What He Wants novel Chapter 405

Avery felt slightly anxious when faced with Nicole's provocation, and cold sweat began to form on her palm which was enveloped in Cayden's large hand.

I don't know how to play the piano.

She stared at Cayden beseechingly, hoping that he would help her. However, the latter remained calm and collected.

Cayden pinched her palm lightly, signaling to her that everything was going to be all right. Turning to Nicole, he arched an eyebrow and said, “Sorry. My girlfriend can't perform because she hurt her hand yesterday.”

He then held up Avery's hand and showed it to everyone present.

Avery had accidentally cut her finger when she was peeling some fruits for the twins the night before. Currently, the tip of her forefinger had a band-aid wrapped around it. It was the perfect excuse to get out of having to play the piano in front of everyone.

The guests nodded understandingly.

Cayden continued, “Although she cannot play the piano today, she has a beautiful singing voice. I'm sure she'd love to perform a song for everyone. As her boyfriend, I am obligated to play the accompaniment for her.”

Bewildered, Avery stared at Cayden dubiously.

While it's true that I'm good at singing, I seldom sing in front of others because I am shy in nature and have stage fright. How does Cayden know that I can sing?

Cayden returned her look with a grin and mouthed the words. “It's a secret.”

When Cayden's depression reared its head years ago, his grandfather had sent him to a small town to recover. Over there, he suffered from insomnia and would often go running in a nearby field to take the edge off his mental disturbance. One night, just as he was running around the circular field, he overheard a breathtaking voice of someone singing.

Instantly, he followed the direction of the voice in search of the owner.

He spotted a girl with neat shoulder-length hair standing under a stout hundred-year-old banyan tree. The moonlight shone on her, and she was so immersed in her song that she did not even notice his presence.

Cayden hid on the other side of the banyan tree trunk and listened to her singing quietly. The girl's voice was pure and ethereal. It washed away the dark and gloomy feelings in his heart and made him yearn to step toward the light.

That was the first time Cayden had seen Avery, and her existence became one that was special to him. While she was not some great beauty, her simple and elegant appearance in addition to her otherworldly temperament made her incredibly unforgettable.

At that instance, her voice had graced his ears, and the sight of her tugged at his heartstrings.

Later on, he went to great lengths and finally found out about Avery's identity. From that night onward, the girl with neat hair and a beautiful singing voice burrowed her way into his heart.

Of course, Cayden never told Avery about their little interlude.

“Don't worry, I can play the accompaniment to whichever song you choose to sing. Believe in yourself, and believe in me,” Cayden said.

Avery, who had been feeling nervous, took a deep breath after hearing Cayden's reassurance. She flashed him a bright smile, indicating that she was no longer afraid.

Carefully, Cayden led Avery to a white stool by the piano before sitting down before the piano himself.

He placed his slender hands on top of the piano keys. His sleek fingers, along with their neatly trimmed nails, appeared neat and tidy. They contrasted with the black and white keys, forming a pleasant picture.

The song Avery chose was one that was popular recently, and it was a song that was dear to her.

“Silently, the sea waves drowned out the night. It roams toward the ends of the skies...”

The crowd was stunned the moment her voice rang out.

Her voice was gentle, and her timbre ethereal. It sounded melodious and incredibly moving. Accompanied by Cayden's seamless playing, their performance intoxicated the audience.

Avery could always forget her surroundings when she sang.

The song came from the bottom of her heart, and its lyrics, “you were born to roam, as I let you go,” resonated with her.

Although the song's melody was beautiful, Avery felt like crying as she sang.

Her relationship with Cayden had stabilized, and they had vowed to never part. The latter had also repeatedly sworn to protect her for the rest of their lives. However, for reasons unknown, her left eyelid wouldn't stop twitching ominously.

Nicole's provocative attitude earlier that evening, especially, had made Avery feel increasingly ill at ease.

Her sixth sense was telling her that perhaps Cayden would be like the person in the song. He would leave me behind...

The thought of it terrified her.

Cayden was like a graceful prince as he played the accompaniment. His gorgeously sculpted hands touched the piano keys agilely, causing the musical notes to leap around like fairies, filling the air melodiously.

The exquisite and melancholic tune accompanied Avery's voice beautifully.

The men below the stage had their eyes glued on Avery while the women locked their gazes on Cayden. They did not bother concealing the adoration in their eyes.

Avery continued to pour her emotions into her singing.

Her lovely voice, pure and innocent, told the sorrowful story of the characters in the song who were cruelly forced to part ways. In the final part of the harmony, it was almost as if she could summon a person's soul. Her singing pierced one's heart directly and it was so beautiful that it moved the audience to tears.

Avery found tears glistening in her own eyes as the song came to an end. It wasn't until she was swept into a faintly mint-scented embrace did she come back to her senses.

Claire was also in a trance. As she stared at Avery, thoughts of the young girl once again intruded into her mind. Why is she so similar to me? The resemblance between us is uncanny. Not just her appearance and her temperament, but even her singing voice is just like mine.

Claire had loved to sing when she was young, and Avery's voice was nearly identical to hers.

Why is she so similar to me?

The guests were rendered silent after hearing Avery sing. After a long moment, the hall erupted into thunderous applause that was far more deafening than when Nicole had played the piano. The applause continued for a long time. This time, it was completely heartfelt. They applauded Avery's heavenly singing voice, Cayden's wonderful piano accompaniment, and their impeccable coordination.

“Mr. Moore is a man of many talents. Not only is he a fantastic businessman, but he can also even play the piano so brilliantly. He's truly admirable!”

“Mr. Moore's companion is wonderful as well. Her appearance belies her singing voice. Truly, they are such a talented pair.”

The praises in the hall grew louder and louder. All of a sudden, Avery and Cayden were in the limelight.

Livid, Nicole she pressed her hand against her chest, which felt as though a heavy weight was crushing it, so much so that she felt suffocated.

No! It wasn't supposed to happen like this! Avery should have made a fool of herself. She should have been ridiculed by the upper-class guests.

However, things had not gone as planned. She had done something stupid. Instead of showing Avery up, her foolish actions only served to make Avery the center of attention.
