A chill ran down Avery's spine when she detected the anger in Cayden's tone.
Uh oh. Avery had been so focused on work that she had completely forgotten his advice to not stress herself too much. Cayden had even forbidden her to work overtime.
Avery's voice sounded clear on the phone. “I'm almost done...”
Cayden fell silent. Suddenly, his voice rose a few octaves. “I remembered asking Yulissa to give you easier tasks. Did she go against my orders and add to your workload?”
“No! No!” Avery clarified immediately. After a small pause, she admitted sheepishly, “The other employees are toiling so hard. It's not fair if I'm the only one with easy work. Besides, the renovation project is such an important project. I can't take it lightly...”
Avery's voice faltered as she looked at the huge pile of documents on her desk. Holding her phone in her left hand, Avery moved the mouse subconsciously with her right hand as she continued to work on the draft.
“If I didn't call you, how much longer did you plan to work?” Cayden asked icily.
“Uh... Another half an hour, I suppose.” Avery peeked at the time on her laptop screen. “Time sure flies when I'm working,” she whispered.
In the past few days, Leif had been the one who picked Avery up from work. Cayden was a workaholic. It was the norm for him to clock out late. On the rare occasions that Cayden did not work overtime, he would drive Avery home.
Cayden breathed out a gentle sigh. “What am I gonna do with you?”
With that, he ended the call without warning.
Upon hearing his sigh, Avery blinked before shaking her head, deciding not to think too much about it.
She turned her attention back to her desk. The messy piles of documents on her desk and the unfinished work on her laptop made Avery dizzy all of a sudden.
Fishing out a small spray, Avery sprayed her face with some water and patted her cheeks gently to wake herself up before continue drawing.
Only the soft sound of a mouse clicking could be heard in the spacious office.
When Avery was focused on work, she would not think about anything else. In the blink of an eye, half an hour flew by. Her design was almost completed as well.
She wanted to complete the design completely before going to Cayden's office to look for him, but upon remembering his temper, Avery was certain that he would get angry if she did not leave the office by nine.
Reluctantly, Avery saved the incomplete design on the laptop and transferred it to a flash drive before clearing out the documents on her desk. She planned to finish her work at home.
Just as she was busy keeping away her things, she heard footsteps coming from behind her.
Avery froze.
The office was empty. She was the only person in there.
All of a sudden, she recalled a video she had accidentally viewed the day before. It was a video about paranormal activities in an office.
The hair on Avery's neck stood up as she felt herself getting dizzy. Grabbing a pencil holder on her desk, she hurled it in the direction of the footsteps with all her might.
“Are you trying to kill your own husband?” Cayden's low voice rang out in the dark. Before Avery could recover from the shock, her entire body had been wrapped in a warm embrace.
Avery raised her head in surprise. A blush crept onto her face when she saw Cayden holding the pencil holder in his right hand as he wrapped his left arm around her.
“Sorry. I thought someone had broken into the office. I didn't know that it was you...” Avery quickly took the pencil holder from him and placed it back on her desk. Her face became an even brighter shade of red as she recalled what she had done.
“Let's go. Today's the Winter Light Festival. There's somewhere I want to take you.” Cayden did not continue pressing on the matter. His eyes were filled with the adoration he felt for her.
Under the office light, Cayden's handsome side profile was illuminated by the soft light, casting shadows at all the right angles and enhancing his charming looks.
Avery nodded obediently. She quickly tidied up the documents and stuffed them into her handbag.
When she was done, she grinned, flashing her pearly whites at him like a little girl. “Done!”
Cayden rubbed her head affectionately before leading her out of the building.
Both of them drove to an old town in Ackleton.
As they drove through the night in the BMW, Cayden turned on some music. The song that played was an elegant instrumental harp music, one of Avery's favorite genres.
The two of them chatted as the soft music continued to play in the background. Before long, the one-hour car ride went by as they reached their destination.
Due to the Winter Light Festival, the town was crowded with people of all ages.
Logically speaking, they wouldn't be able to find any parking. Fortunately, Cayden was always one step ahead. Before they came, he had contacted a friend of his who owned an upscale hotel in the area.
He drove the car to the hotel parking lot and straight into the space reserved for him by his friend.
After getting out of the car, Cayden held Avery's hand as they strolled leisurely along the stone pavement of the town.
Kingrys was a very popular ancient town in the south. It had over millennia's worth of history and had been named one of the top ten charming ancient towns in Chanaea. The view of the town during nighttime was especially breathtaking.
It was a full moon that night. Every building in the town was decorated with lights and candles of different colors. Whenever tourists passed by a huge candle, they could not help but grin, feeling as though they had entered another world—a world filled with hope and fantasy.
Avery grabbed Cayden's arm as she walked. Every few seconds, she would stop and gasp. “This town is so different from the town I grew up in. The Chanaean-style windowsills in my hometown were made out of black sandalwood, and the roofs were made out of ceramic roof tiles. The town is spacious, and the atmosphere is like those of a quadrangle courtyard. Yet, this town seems more modest and artistic. Every corner of this place reminds people of poetry and art. It's like your heart will soften just by looking at this place...”
Cayden helped Avery zip up her jacket. “I'm glad you like it,” he said gently.
Even though Avery grew up in a small town in the north, Cayden knew that Avery was not like the northern girls—domineering and casual—but rather gentle and elegant like a southern girl.
He had guessed that she would appreciate the lovely night view of a southern town, which was why he had cleared out his busy schedule to make time so that he could bring her there.
In order to bring Avery to enjoy the night in the town, Cayden even missed out on the tradition of eating dinner with Jeffery at the Moore residence during the Winter Light Festival for the first time.
The beautiful couple stood out even among the crowd around them.
As Cayden and Avery enjoyed the scenery and the lights, other tourists were glancing in their direction instead.
Candles were placed on the sides, lighting up the path in front of them to no end. The warm glow from the candlelight shone onto Avery's fair face, causing her to look even more beautiful when she smiled. The sight took Cayden's breath away, melting his heart even more.
Truth be told, he had never had the intention of celebrating any festivals in the past. It was only after he had met Avery did he start to pay more attention to various seasons and celebrations like a normal person.
