However, Wisteria was genuinely unwilling to accept the turns of events. The man she had protected and secretly loved for ten years was about to become another woman's husband.
Despite her efforts to recompose herself, her tightly-clenched fists still shook slightly. “Mr. Moore, are you really going to get engaged to an insignificant employee? You deserve a better woman with your status. I think Ms. Rumpley is too immature in all aspects.”
“Oh? In that case, what kind of woman do you think is worthy of me?” Cayden's eyes glinted coldly.
Wisteria, who had always been shrewd, failed to notice Cayden's darkened expression because she was too agitated at that moment.
She plowed on, “I think you should be with an assertive yet tender woman, and she must also be highly competent at work. If you were to find a wife who can stand as your equal, she could even share some of your heavy workloads. In that case, you won't be so tired.”
Cayden put down his pen, bored his piercing gaze into Wisteria, and refuted, “You're wrong, Ms. Summers. I'm looking for a wife instead of a working partner. She needs to be someone who can connect with me spiritually. I feel at ease when I'm with Avery. That is a soothing sensation other women have failed to invoke within me. She's like the missing rib the Creator had stolen from me that has since returned to my side. Her existence completes my life. Ms. Summers, you've never experienced true love. That is why you assign so many requirements to your other half. When you finally meet your Mr. Right one day, you'll understand how those requirements are of no importance.”
Wisteria wanted to yell hysterically at him, disproving his statement and telling him she had already met the love of her life at the company ten years ago.
However, she didn't dare to do so. She lacked the courage and was also unwilling to let go of her ego and pride.
Her expression turned gloomy. “Mr. Moore, please continue with your work. I shall take my leave first.”
“Okay.” Without looking up, he refocused his attention on his work.
Wisteria, wearing a grimace, exited the room.
When she returned to her office, she nearly thrashed everything in the room as uncontrolled rage overwhelmed her.
There was a knock on the door before Yulissa entered Wisteria's office and noticed the latter's disheartened appearance. She knew Wisteria would've been devastated to learn of Cayden and Avery's engagement, so she made Wisteria a cup of coffee.
“Ms. Summers, have some coffee to calm yourself down.”
Wisteria knocked over the cup of coffee. Her eyes gleamed with intense hatred. “I'm not in the mood to drink coffee now that things have progressed to this stage!”
The hot coffee scalded the back of Yulissa's hand, but she didn't dare to complain about the pain. Instead, she continued to persuade Wisteria, “Ms. Summers, you can't change anything at this point, no matter how anxious you are. To be honest, I despise Avery more than you. That woman is nothing but a seductress. She made a move on Mr. Moore while simultaneously flirting with Mr. Kendrick. I really don't know what Mr. Moore sees in her!”
Wisteria knitted her brows. “Avery flirted with Mr. Kendrick? When did that happen?”
Yulissa fabricated fallacies to discredit Avery. “Many employees from the design department witnessed this. When we were having our meal at the cafeteria the other day, Mr. Kendrick showered her with concern. The two conversed in such close proximity that they were one step away from kissing one another. What do you think of that? Isn't she a sl*t? Not only is she not satisfied with having Mr. Moore as her partner, but she's also trying to seduce her brother-in-law. She's such a loose woman!”
Discomfort churned within Yulissa when she recalled how caring Kendrick was toward Avery.
As Cayden was overly indifferent and distant, Yulissa didn't dare to make a move on him. However, she had always yearned to nab Kendrick.
Unfortunately, Kendrick never paid her any attention, and that prompted Yulissa to place all the blame on Avery.
She felt if it weren't for Avery's existence, Kendrick, who had always been frivolous, wouldn't have disregarded her.
At the thought of Avery having such a promiscuous character yet being able to win Cayden's heart, a look of immense detestation spread across Wisteria's face.
“I can't believe Mr. Moore is infatuated with a woman like her. Ms. Yantz, do you think all men think with their lower bodies? Avery is lacking in every aspect, so how is she qualified to compete against me for Mr. Moore's affection?”
Yulissa replied disdainfully, “Ms. Summers, I suppose you're unfamiliar with a few things. Some men are like that. They fancy these women who put up a serious facade. Perhaps Avery is very skilled in bed. How else could she have attracted Mr. Moore's interest? Nevertheless, you don't have to worry, Ms. Summers. A woman like her who relies on her body to captivate a man will be abandoned sooner or later. I have a feeling Avery will meet a miserable end in the future.”
Wisteria fumed in indignation. “What a joke. Mr. Moore must've seen all kinds of gorgeous women in his life. I've served him for a long time, so I'm very familiar with his style. He's definitely not that kind of superficial man. How could he decide to marry a woman simply because she's great in bed? Avery must've utilized some special trick...”
It was because she deeply loved Cayden that Wisteria continued to defend him even at that moment and held Avery solely accountable for everything that happened.
Chills traveled down Yulissa's spine as she saw how Wisteria, an overbearing person, lost her temper.
Still, Yulissa braced herself and suggested, “Ms. Summers, quit overthinking this matter. So what if Mr. Moore and Avery become engaged? You can come up with ways to force them to get a divorce even if they are married, let alone a mere engagement. With your intelligence, I think dealing with Avery should be as easy as snapping your fingers for you.”
Wisteria suddenly burst out laughing.
She regained her usual composure a few moments later and instructed Yulissa, “That's enough. You can leave now. Make me another cup of coffee to invigorate me.”
Yulissa nodded meekly.
After Yulissa left, the malicious smile on Wisteria's face turned more sinister. Yulissa is right. Why am I so unnerved by a mere engagement? As long as they are not married, I can devise countless methods to break them up!
Meanwhile, in the mansion, Avery felt nervous and uneasy all the time, even though tomorrow would be her engagement day with Cayden.
The disk's existence bugged her and constantly reminded her of that unknown woman's harsh threats, causing her to feel stressed and exhausted.
Her children sat on the living room couch, jovially playing proverbs games. Seeing her mother sighing from time to time, Rory decided to stop playing with her brother.
She approached Avery and nestled in the latter's arms. Then, Rory carefully stretched out her petite hand to smooth out Avery's creased brows. “Mommy, what's going on? You'll be engaged to Daddy tomorrow, so why are you sighing?”
Avery embraced her daughter and sniffed at her fragrant small figure before uttering melancholily, “I'm fine. It's just—”
Before she could finish the rest of her sentence, her phone suddenly blared.
All the color drained from Avery's face when she noticed the unknown woman calling again.
