Avery had to admit that she felt secure while staying under his protection.
No woman would refuse an eligible gentleman's protection.
One might think their partner is their soulmate, but in the end, they'd end up with a broken heart. They'd only realize that love could be sweet as honey and cruel as a Grim Reaper after getting their heart broken. I don't know what Cayden would do to me, but I can't take the risk of letting him break my heart.
Throughout the entire journey, Avery didn't utter a word.
After arriving at the gate of her residential area, she removed his suit jacket to return it to him.
She didn't want Cayden to come into the residential area. If he finds out which block and which floor my house is, will he show up with the kids at my doorstep all of a sudden, like what he did in the past?
As Nina was staying in the same house as her, she didn't want to cause a misunderstanding.
Xavier and Cecelia had misunderstood her relationship with Cayden, and that was humiliating enough. She didn't want her friend to misunderstand her too.
Besides, she had just broken up with Zayne. If Nina saw Cayden sending her home, she would probably assume Avery was a loose woman.
“Mr. Moore, goodbye.” Avery handed the suit jacket back to him.
Cayden stood half a meter away and stared at his black suit jacket that she gripped tightly.
He didn't take it from her.
Under the streetlight, he lit a cigarette and took a puff before glancing at her. “What are you afraid of?” he inquired in a deep voice.
Avery was afraid of his entire being—his attractive face, noble status, elegance, and everything else about him.
“Mr. Moore, why are you making it difficult for me?”
“What did you just say?” Cayden stepped forward and held her chin so she couldn't avoid his gaze. Brushing his thumb across her chin, he said, “I have my own reasons.”
Avery was forced to meet his unfathomable gaze.
What reason could that be? Could it be that he's so interested in me just because he thinks the unattainable woman will always be the best, just like any other man? Then, after he manages to win my heart, he will slowly lose interest in me. After that, he will dump me as soon as I become a worthless plaything in his eyes. Only then will he let me go. Is that so?
Avery turned away slightly and freed herself from his grasp.
Cayden lifted his hand and bit on the cigarette between his fingers. However, he showed no intention of taking his suit jacket from her.
Avery was helpless, so she could only speak her mind. “Mr. Moore, please spare me and stop playing games with me. I think plenty of women would die to date you. You can have your pick.”
Cayden puffed out a ring of smoke in her direction. “Go on.”
Avery stood against the glare of the streetlamp. Her eyes seemed to be sparkling with tears as she said, “I want nothing more than to lead a peaceful life. Thus, I refuse to rely on you, nor do I want to climb up the social ladder. I think many women would like that, though. You can pick anyone... A socialite or a celebrity... Anyone but me.”
Cayden gazed at her. Despite wearing a calm expression, he was furious deep down. He had never followed behind a woman like how he had done for her in his entire life.
Not even his mother had the privilege of making him do that for her.
Alas, Avery did not notice how he had given her special treatment and treated her differently.
“Do you think anyone can rely on me as they please? Have you forgotten how my manhood managed to arouse your desire with just one touch? How dare you say this now?” Cayden retorted icily.
Hearing his insulting words, Avery looked up in surprise. It was dark, but the blush on her cheeks was evident even to the naked eye.
“Wait for me here. You are free to imagine how I'll punish you if you refuse to listen to me.” With that said, Cayden grabbed his suit jacket and turned to leave.
Avery stood rooted to the spot.
Cayden's retreating figure looked really imposing.
Her eyes fluttered shut. Even though Cayden looks like the senior from the neighboring high school, Moore, I know they are not the same person. Moore was charming as a prince, but Cayden is sharp-tongued and hot-tempered. I want nothing more than to stay away from him. They are obviously different beings. They can't be the same person!
She was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't saw an Audi Q5 driving toward her.
Zayne's gloomy expression made Milana, who was sitting in the passenger seat, slip into a foul mood. Zayne was about to drive to a supermarket's paid parking lot when Milana suddenly yelled, “Stop the car!”
Without looking at her, Zayne snapped impatiently, “The road isn't yours. I can't stop anywhere you like.”
“I saw Avery! Stop the car!” Milana whipped her head around to glare at Zayne. “Your darling is right ahead. Won't you stop the car?”
Indeed, Zayne's expression changed when he heard Avery's name.
Milana was sorely disappointed, thinking that the baby in her belly was nothing but a joke. She yelled, “You blamed me for causing you to lose your darling, right? Fine! I shall offer an explanation to her so you can get her back!”
Without waiting for his reply, she opened the door and stormed out.
Zayne parted his lips, trying to say something to stop her, but he ended up saying nothing and drove the car to the parking lot.
Avery was surprised to see Milana.
“The look on your face when you're surprised to see me here is interesting,” Milana said coldly. Her gaze was fixed on Avery as she continued, “It is easy to find out where you live. It seems that you forgot to tell Nephele that we're not on good terms.”
Nephele often came to visit Avery and knew where she lived.
As Leonardo's second wife, Henrietta would naturally follow him back to his hometown, Livingsfill. Milana had tagged along with them a few times out of curiosity.
Every time Nephele learned that the Rumpleys were back, she'd pay them a visit and ask about Avery. Thus, Nephele and Milana ended up being friends.
Milana kept her evilness under a lid and put on an innocent front to the public, so Nephele didn't put her guard up.
Recalling the news that Milana was pregnant with Zayne's child, Avery remained unfazed instead of blowing her top.
“Remember to let me know when you marry Zayne. I'm glad that you two get to live a happy life together.” Strangely, Avery thought they were a perfect match for each other.
“Why? Are you trying to act tough even though your heart is broken? I won't laugh at you even if you admit you're upset that I've taken your boyfriend from you.” Milana's voice wasn't loud, but each and every of her word was sarcastic and hurtful.
Avery chuckled lightly. “I tossed a pair of dirty and torn shoes into the trash bin after I got sick of them. Who picked them up later is none of my business. I threw them away, so why would I be upset?”
Hearing that, Milana couldn't keep her cool anymore.
