The CEO Gets What He Wants novel Chapter 507

Chapter 507 Take You As My Goddaughter

Noticing Claire's gaze on her belly, Avery swiftly moved her hand to the side of her leg encased in plaster.

Then, she pretended to snag the covers at the side over and drape them over her legs. In a gentle voice, she remarked, “While it's already spring now, the weather seems rather unpredictable these days. Sometimes, I even feel cold in the room... You've also got to wear more, Claire. It's easy to catch a cold in such weather.”

Calmly retracting her gaze, Claire commented smilingly, “I know things haven't been easy for you, Ms. Rumpley. Perhaps it's because you don't have anyone close to you that you now yearn to find someone to depend upon. But I feel that Cayden and you are really unsuited. Actually, I've taken a liking to you the very first time I laid eyes on you. You're about the same age as Nickie, and your personality is commendable. I love girls of your type. If you don't mind, I'd like to take you as my goddaughter. Then, you wouldn't feel lonely anymore. If you were to run into trouble in the future, I could also help you. For instance, your grandfather's treatment fees and your job later on... On top of that, I'd give you a generous dowry when you've found a man who truly suits you.”

While saying all that, she wore a perpetual smile on her face.

She was a gentle woman in the first place, so her soft and tender tone was downright suffocating to Avery.

“I've got my grandfather and aunt now, Claire. They're my family, so I'm not alone. As for being your goddaughter, I'm sorry, but I'm all too aware that I'm not worthy of that since my status is low. Nonetheless, thank you for the offer.” Avery clutched the covers tightly.

Claire's words had wave after wave of unease flooding her.

In the face of her demurral, Claire's expression remained unchanged. Her smile was still as graceful as ever.

She proceeded to take out a business card from her bag before holding it out to Avery. “Ms. Rumpley, I know my suggestion might make you uncomfortable, but I really proposed it for your sake. I don't mean to force you or anything. If you need any help, you can come to my company and look for me directly. This card will gain you access, and you don't need to make an appointment beforehand. If you were to leave Trident Group, you're welcome to work at my company. I'll give you the position of vice general manager straight away.”

“Thank you.” Avery took the business card, feeling as though it was burning a hole in her hand.

“Don't put too much pressure on yourself. I'm only doing all this because I sincerely like you.”

As Claire said that, she stood up and straightened Avery's slightly wrinkled collar. After doing that, she murmured, “I've still got something to do at the office, so I can't stay here for long. I'll be leaving first. Enjoy the mushroom soup. I'll be back to visit you when I'm free.”

When she had left, Avery drank the soup she brought. However, she could not shake off the feeling that the mushroom soup that tasted incredible earlier was utterly tasteless right then.

...

By the time Cayden finished handling the company matters and returned to the hospital room, he was greeted by the sight of Avery with her face drained of all color.

As she gazed at him, the look in her eyes was bleak and helpless. Even her eyelashes quivered. “Say, Cayden, will there be a happily ever after for us?”

Thanks to his counsel throughout the past few days, she had always been optimistic and strong, looking forward to the future with much anticipation.

Even when she had met with such a severe car accident, she merely brushed off her physical pain. Never had she exhibited such a sorrowful expression.

Cayden's gaze swept over the thermal lunch box on the table. He could faintly scent the fragrance of mushroom soup.

The aroma gave him an inexplicably familiar feeling, and his shrewd eyes flickered. “Who came to visit you today?”

Avery did not answer that even as the incandescent light shone on her thin face, rendering her as pale as a sheet.

“In the past, I thought that there'll always be a rainbow after the storm as long as I hung on. But now, I'm really uncertain about our future.”

At once, Cayden's nerves stretched taut.

Picking up the thermal lunch box, he studied it carefully. The familiar fragrance of mushroom soup had him abruptly recalling the scene whereby Nicole came to look for him at the office one day with mushroom soup.

Because he hated that woman to the core, he threw the mushroom soup she brought into the trash can.

Although he did not try the mushroom soup, his innately sensitive sense of smell carved its aroma into his mind.

He placed the lunch box down, his gaze turning icy all of a sudden. “Someone from the Lambert family was here, yes? Nicole came and sought you out?”

In response, Avery shook her head. “No, she didn't come over. Mrs. Lambert came at noon today.”

Cayden frowned in puzzlement. “Mrs. Lambert came over? Did she make things difficult for you?”

A bitter smile curved Avery's lips. “I'd rather she had done that. She was exceedingly polite with me and didn't make things difficult for me at all. Instead, she wanted to take me as her goddaughter and even said I could go and seek her out if I were to run into any trouble in the future. That aside, she offered to provide me with a job.”

Cayden's expression was dark and subdued, yet his eyes were frightfully cold. “What exactly is that woman's motive?”

“She thought we'd broken up, saying that you're now dating Nicole, and she was afraid that I'll again butt into your relationship with her daughter. She was likely coercing me to leave you by playing the amicable card. Honestly, I could've rebutted her harshly and even turned a deaf ear to her had she played the villain. But she was seemingly taking my feelings into consideration when she said all that. Conversely, I kept lying to her... If she were to learn the truth of the matter one day, I really don't know how I should face her. Nicole and I have always been at odds, so how could I possibly be her goddaughter?”

“Trust me. Everything will pass in no time. Just like a dream, everything will revert to normal when you wake up.” Cayden pulled her into his arms.

Avery hugged him around the waist. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she was so downcast that she resembled a lost child.

She embraced him lightly as though holding a fragile dream. “I, too, hope that this is but a dream. Hopefully, the storm will pass soon.”

“I'll deal with this matter as soon as possible. You're my wife, Avery, my only wife in this lifetime.” Cayden hugged her tightly, feeling like he had been stabbed in the heart.

He could not stand seeing her weak and helpless, for it made him feel beyond useless.

In that instant, he really wanted to tell the world the truth. He did not want to keep up the charade anymore, no longer wishing to plot and plan as long as she was happy again.

“I trust you. I always do.” Avery suddenly laughed in relief.

Cayden hugged her silently before fixing his eyes on her, gazing at her sweet smile. He stroked her soft and silky hair, inwardly making up his mind.
