Chapter 514 Her Trump Card
As the days went by, Avery's leg gradually recovered under the doctor's care.
Soon, she could slowly walk with the support of a walking stick.
During the recovery at home, Avery had been coming up with drafts and preparing for the Certified Professional Constructor examination at the same time.
She would also paint during her free time, leading a relatively carefree life.
On the contrary, Cayden had recently been overwhelmed with work and would return home late, looking exhausted.
Avery felt sorry for him and wished she could do something to ease his workload.
Cayden not only offered Avery words of comfort but also provided reassurance that their situation would improve once the hectic period had passed.
Avery did not quite buy his explanation. Her right eye had been twitching, and that gave her a sense of fear.
Despite having many questions in her mind, she did not want to burden Cayden with them. In the end, she decided to just keep her thoughts to herself.
Avery scoured the internet for any information on Nicole and Cayden but came up empty-handed. The stories that came up in her search results were old news and provided no new updates on them.
She could not help but sense something was amiss.
If Cayden was now in a so-called relationship with Nicole, Avery believed that given Nicole's nature, she would have announced their relationship to the world.
Similarly, given that Cayden had always been in the media spotlight, Avery found it hard to believe that there were no updates on his relationship with Nicole. She started to wonder why the internet was devoid of news about them.
Avery was unaware that Cayden had filtered all the latest news about Nicole from her devices. He did not want her to overthink, so he used the latest technology to restrict Avery's access to some websites. This was why she could only find outdated stories about them online.
At the same time, Cayden had also warned Avery's close friends such as Cecelia and Nina not to update her about the happenings.
Hence, Avery had no clue what was going on.
Of course, this also meant that Avery would also not be aware of Cayden's engagement with Nicole and how it had made headlines on major news websites.
...
Over at Trident Group, Cayden received an internal call from his secretary. “Mr. Moore, Ms. Nicole is here.”
It was also at that moment that he heard someone knocking on his office door.
“Cayden, are you busy?” Nicole's cloying voice came from behind the door when she opened it.
Clad in a custom-made white Chanel dress, Nicole entered the luxuriously decorated office that exuded a masculine aura while ruffling her straight hair.
Upon noticing how Cayden did not pay attention to her appearance, Nicole felt a pang of disappointment, but it did not diminish the unwavering ambition in her eyes.
Not only was she attractive, but she also came from a wealthy family. Since she was about to be engaged to Cayden, she believed he would eventually marry her.
At that stage, she was a step closer to becoming Cayden's fiancée.
However, that was not her ultimate goal. She aspired to become Mrs. Moore, his lawful wife, and she wanted him to fall for her charm.
Nicole flashed a confident smile. “Oh, Cayden, why are you always so busy?”
“What can I do for you?” Cayden asked, without bothering to glance up from the document he was signing.
“You've been so busy lately, and we haven't gone shopping together for a long time. By the way, I'll be attending a film festival tomorrow. Can you be my plus one?” Despite Cayden's apparent disinterest, Nicole smiled sweetly.
She knew winning over someone as perfect as Cayden was not an easy feat, and she also understood why he would put up a tough front to give women a hard time.
In fact, Nicole was not repulsed by his attitude.
She opined that an alpha male should behave in such a manner. She would not have bothered to entertain Cayden if he were the kind of man who would constantly cling to her.
Cayden paused writing and responded icily, “I'm sorry. I'm busy with work.”
After giving her a cold shoulder again, the man drew out another stack of documents and continued to work.
Nicole's irritation grew as Cayden continued to ignore her.
She snatched away the document in his hand and spoke in a tone of grievance. “Please don't ignore me like this, Cayden. We're about to get engaged, and you'll soon be my fiancé. Why do you treat me this way? I know you're occupied with work, and I don't want to bother you, but you must take care of yourself despite your hectic schedule. You're not made of steel, so you should rest once in a while. Besides, I waited until you're almost done with work to come to see you...”
“I really don't have time for this. I'll accompany you when I'm free,” Cayden expressed his dismay as she kept distracting him from his work.
He glanced at Nicole impatiently. Her youthful and stunning appearance failed to spark any interest in him. In fact, the more he looked at her, the more annoyed he became.
Undoubtedly, Nicole had exquisite facial features. Her detailed makeup, beautiful clothes, and slender figure made her look as graceful as a rose blooming in the garden. Yet, at that moment, Cayden's mind was consumed by the image of Avery's makeup-free face.
By comparison, Nicole's excessive makeup only served to highlight Avery's natural beauty.
Upon noticing how indifferent Cayden was, Nicole resorted to her trump card.
Putting on a bewildered and innocent look, she said, “Dad wants you to come with me to the Lambert residence tonight because he has something to discuss with you. Cayden, you must meet my dad no matter how busy you are. When I went to the study to call him for lunch earlier, I overheard him talking to his secretary about some disk thing. They even mentioned your name, Cayden. They were also discussing the date for our wedding...”
Cayden stopped in his tracks. A corner of his lips quirked up, and he responded, “Sure. I'll go shopping with you once I'm done with these documents.”
There was something peculiar about his charming and elegant smile that sent a shiver down Nicole's spine, but it did not bother her in the slightest. It doesn't matter if he doesn't love me. As long as I know his Achilles' heel, he'll have no choice but to marry me.
After leaving the office, Nicole looped her arm through Cayden's, and they strolled through the magnificent and ornately decorated lobby of the Trident Group building.
Upon noticing how intimate they were, Wisteria narrowed her eyes to glare at Nicole's flawlessly made-up face. The arrogant air Nicole exuded, as if she were the very embodiment of Mrs. Moore herself, further fueled Wisteria's jealousy.
She was taken aback by how quickly Nicole had filled the void left by Avery's departure. She was even more incredulous to learn that Nicole was set to marry the very man she had been crushing on for years.
“Mr. Moore,” Wisteria greeted Cayden, concealing her deep-seated adoration for him.
She also suppressed her emotions and greeted Nicole with a courteous tone, “Good to see you, Ms. Nicole.”
“Hello, Ms. Summers.” Nicole, too, sized the beautiful and capable Wisteria up while keeping the thoughts she had about that woman hidden beneath her friendly demeanor.
Nicole recognized Wisteria as one of Cayden's most competent and trusted confidantes, but her intuition as a woman told her that Wisteria was not an easy person to handle. She could also sense that Wisteria harbored feelings of attraction toward Cayden. She'll be the first person I'll get rid of once I become Mrs. Moore.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Nicole hooked her arm around Cayden and walked away, leaving Wisteria to stare at their retreating backs with a sneer tugging at the corner of her lips. Does she think she's already Mrs. Moore? How dare that deceitful woman who came out of an orphanage believe she's entitled to a man of such high social standing? Only God knows if that engagement will actually come to fruition!
