The CEO Gets What He Wants novel Chapter 539

Chapter 539 Karma Strikes

Avery was beginning to wonder if she would ever see the last of the hospital.

The injury on her leg from the accident had barely healed before she got bitten by the poisonous snakes, which nearly caused a miscarriage.

After all this time with Cayden, it seems like every encounter with danger I have had has been related to him one way or another.

“Could it be that Mr. Moore is a jinx to you, Ery? What a carefree life you've led before being with him. In fact, you barely even caught a cold. Since being with him, you've gotten scratched by a cat, ran over by a car, and even bitten by snakes now. My God! How could so many awful things happen to a single person?” Nina handed the peeled apple to Avery while shaking her head in disbelief.

“I think so too.” Bracing her swollen belly, Cecelia handed Avery a newspaper that was several days old. “Look, ever since you got together with Mr. Moore, you've become a staple for gossip. In fact, news about you is more frequently reported than those movie stars! I think steering clear of him might actually save your life.”

Avery did not know what to say.

Why are other's relationships so smooth sailing and sweet? Mine, however, almost cost me my life.

Though her encounter with the snakes had been days ago, Avery was still plagued by nightmares of the attack. In her dreams, the squirming reptiles widened their scarlet maws to pierce her with their fangs.

Some nights, she even dreamed that she was lying in a pool of blood, having been bitten all over. The mere thought sent a shudder down her spine.

Avery had always been afraid of snakes. This time, the trauma left behind was so severe that it would be long before she could step out of its shadow.

Though she smiled politely at her friend's well-meant advice, she did not take it seriously. “I've known Cayden for years and our relationship isn't something you would understand. That's what love is. It can't be sweet all the time. Sometimes, there would be bitterness. While I'm fortunate enough to bask in the warmth our relationship brings me, I should brave its dangers and cold disappointments.”

Cecelia giggled as she caressed her swollen belly. “Forget it. You've made up your mind to be with Mr. Moore for the rest of your life no matter what we say, anyway. However, you're lucky to have met somebody as gentle, thoughtful, and wealthy as him, who has eyes for you only. It would be nice if you didn't have that many obstacles to face though.”

Nina laughed. “Life is never smooth sailing. How vicious is the person responsible for the snakes though? How could they employ such a wicked tactic against a defenseless pregnant woman? I hope Mr. Moore catches the perpetrator soon and teaches them a lesson. Better yet, I hope this fellow's unborn child turns out deformed! Oops, I shouldn't have said that. Their child is innocent. They should bear the punishment for their sins instead.”

Her profane words made Cecelia laugh even harder. Even Avery chuckled helplessly.

That was Nina's true colors, though it was not proper for her to start cursing whenever her friends became worked up.

“I would like to go out for a walk,” Avery said. “I'm feeling lousy after being stuck in this ward for too long. Let's get some fresh air outside, girls.”

“Sure!” Nina was the first to agree for she hated the smell of sanitizer. “Would you like me to wheel you out, Ery?”

She was worried for Avery's leg, which had not completely healed, and her frail constitution. After all, she nearly had a miscarriage in the aftermath of the accident.

Avery shook her head. It's all right. My leg is almost as good as new. Besides, the doctor told me I should take walks and get some fresh air instead of lying in bed all day. It would also do the baby some good.”

At the mention of the baby, Cecelia began ranting. “That's right. We pregnant women should stay in shape too. You're five months pregnant, right? I'm about seven. It's tiresome having to haul the babies around every day! My limbs are swollen from this. It's not easy being a mother. I swear, after popping these two, I'll be done for the rest of my life.”

Nina covered her mouth to conceal her smile. “If you find them troublesome, you could give me one of your babies and I'll raise them. I don't think they're tiresome.”

Cecelia rolled her eyes. “Though I complain about my two little ones, I love them very much. Nobody can take them from me! Find yourself a man to have them with you if you want children so badly.”

The atmosphere tensed up slightly following her words. Nina's expression became unnaturally upset.

Cecelia did not notice the shift. “What's the matter? Did I say something wrong?” she asked blankly upon noticing Nina's expression.

Avery knew that Cecelia's words had prodded at Nina's old wound. Her heart skipped a beat.

After smoothing her hospital gown, Avery got out of bed and took Nina's arm to lead her outside, smiling as she did so. “Let's go for a walk outside.”

The hospital's surroundings were a refreshing respite, with almost eighty percent of its grounds covered in greenery. Hence, the air was fresh and crisp. That along with spending time with her two best friends exchanging anecdotes from work and life, was just the thing Avery needed after being cooped up in her ward for so long.

Upon arriving at a neighboring building, the women saw police tapes and armed policemen standing guard everywhere.

Every staff entering or exiting that building was subjected to a stringent registration process.

Avery stared, wondering what had happened to warrant the presence of so many policemen.

Could there be a medical dispute?

She exchanged a curious glance with Cecelia. Nina was already on her way over to ask the other bystanders crowding around the building. Soon after, she hurried back.

“Guess what I just heard?” Nina asked Avery and Cecelia mysteriously.

Cecelia grew impatient. “What is it? Stop teasing us!”

“Come over here. I've got some good news.”

Tugging Cecelia by the hand, Nina repositioned her and Avery to stand in a circle.

“I heard that Mr. Lambert's daughter had been kidnapped!” she whispered excitedly. “Hah! Nicole's karma has finally caught up to her! That phony b*tch has finally gotten what's coming.”

Avery was stunned.

She could scarcely believe the coincidence of Nicole being admitted to the same hospital as her, much less of her being kidnapped from there.

Being the best hospital in Ackleton, the number of patients it saw every day was numerous.

I wonder how her kidnappers have managed to take her away under the noses of everybody here.

Suddenly, Avery recalled she heard Cayden say something when she was still semi-conscious... “Take care of the perpetrator!”

Avery's heart jump to her throat. She felt unwell.

Could Cayden have kidnapped Nicole?
