Chapter 541 The Obstetrician
Allie did not expect to meet Yara Lynch again in Ackleton. She was an obstetrician who once helped Claire deliver her baby.
Gritting her teeth, Allie stared at Yara angrily. She was so tempted to hit Yara on her head with her Louis Vuitton bag. “Didn't you promise me to never step into Ackleton ever again? I can't believe that you would go back on your own word! What are you trying to do, Yara? Are you trying to break your promise?”
Yara was in her fifties. She was tall and chubby and had a very ordinary appearance. In fact, it would be difficult to spot her with her average appearance in the crowd. The only thing that stood out was her round and plump body figure.
Yara was Allie's age. However, without maintaining her appearance, she looked much older than Allie.
Yara didn't expect to be caught red-handed by Allie just a few days after she arrived in Ackleton.
Guiltily, she said, “I've been staying overseas for years as promised. My relative just passed away. That's why I return to attend her funeral. After that, I'll leave the country. You have my word!”
Allie didn't believe her. “Do you think I'm a fool? Stop fooling around! If it's the truth, you won't possibly look so delighted! Why would you have the mood to shop in an embroidery shop if your relative had just passed away? Have you been sneaking back here over the years?”
Allie was definitely not dull-witted, albeit having a bad temper.
She was completely skeptical of Yara's words.
“That's not true. Do I look like someone who would go back on my words? I come back to attend my relative's funeral. Come along with me if you don't believe in me. I like embroidery, and embroidery is famous here in Chanaea. It's hard to find an embroidery shop abroad. While I'm here, I plan to buy more embroideries and bring them back. I didn't expect to meet you here,” Yara explained in a hurry, chuckling awkwardly.
Yara regretted taking Allie's money to cover up the truth. Had she not done that, she wouldn't have had to restrict her movement by staying overseas and not being able to return home.
Although everyone assumed Yara lived a glamorous life staying overseas, she felt helpless most of the time living alone.
“Yara, leave immediately once you've settled your matter here. I won't let you off that easily if I see you again. I bet you don't know how powerful my son is. He's the CEO of Trident Group. It's not difficult for me to get rid of you here in Ackleton,” said Allie icily.
Yara lowered her head and recalled some memories from the past after hearing such threatening words.
Twenty years ago, Yara had just graduated from medical university and had been assigned to work as an obstetrician in a small town with an average salary. Working in a government institution, she had to deal with complicated social relationships between colleagues. Very often, some of her colleagues there would give her a hard time.
Being a proud person, Yara refused to tolerate those schemes.
She decisively resigned from her position after much deliberation to set up her gynecology clinic.
Yara's enthusiastic service and outstanding medical skills helped her clinic to gain a little bit of reputation and establish her client base.
She remembered everything from that day clearly. It was raining cats and dogs outside, and she was working alone in the clinic.
In the evening, a charming pregnant lady visited the clinic, and the patient's name was Claire Walsh.
Claire's amniotic fluid had broken, causing her baby to be in danger.
Usually, the husbands or family members would accompany the mother to a hospital before the delivery. However, Claire's husband was not in sight.
Instead, it was Allie who kept her company. Yara's first impression of Allie was her flamboyant outfits.
Due to the remote location, the hospital was too far away for them. They offered Yara high pay for the delivery. Yara didn't give it much thought and agreed to deliver the baby for Claire.
Other than having a weak physique, Claire had a narrow pelvis. Her body condition made the delivery a difficult one.
Hours passed, but Claire was still unable to give birth to the baby.
She felt extreme pain in her abdomen and was exhausted from the process. It was too excruciating for Claire to bear that her consciousness became a blur.
Blood was gushing out from her, making her condition worse.
It was a critical moment. Yara could either save Claire or the baby.
At that time, communication and transportation in that small neighborhood were less-developed, and it was inconvenient to get an ambulance too.
Feeling helpless, Yara had to ask Claire to sign a medical waiver.
As Allie was not Claire's family member, she had no right to sign the waiver for her. Yara had to ask for Claire's consent before proceeding with the necessary.
“Claire, you're in a critical condition now and are losing a lot of blood. You may choose to save your life or the baby's. I need your family member to sign the waiver for you. Since you're alone here, I'll leave the decision to you.”
Shortly after, Yara handed the agreements to Claire and added, “Sign on Agreement A if you choose to save your life. If you want to save the baby, sign on Agreement B.”
Claire was breaking out in a cold sweat at that time. She looked weak, unable to tolerate the pain anymore.
Nevertheless, upon hearing that question, she answered unwaveringly, “Save my baby! I'm okay with anything as long as my baby is healthy and safe!”
“Claire, you should save your life first. Your life is more important!” Allie tried to convince her.
Yara persuaded, “She's right, Ms. Walsh. You can have another baby in the future. Do you want your baby to be born without a mother?”
Claire answered firmly, “Save my baby at all costs! I beg you, doctor. Something happened to my husband, and he wishes to see our baby. I don't know how to face him if I can't save our baby! If my baby is gone, I don't want to live anymore.”
As Claire said that, she started sobbing.
She couldn't help but blame herself for being useless.
Yara didn't know what to do as she watched Claire cry pitifully. She respected her decision and let her sign the waiver. The rest was up to fate.
Just when everyone thought Claire couldn't make it, she fought hard and was fortunate enough to give birth to a beautiful baby girl.
Eventually, Claire was out of danger. Perhaps it was because she had been tormented too much during the delivery that she fell asleep right after that.
Yara was exhilarated to welcome the newborn into this world. While she was still rejoicing, she was approached by Allie to make a secret deal with her.
That deal stopped her from returning to her country for over twenty years. She couldn't even fulfill her duty as a daughter to her parents. Thinking about that, Yara merely felt a gush of regret.
She couldn't help but wonder what grudge did Allie have against Claire that Allie wanted to harm her best friend.
On the surface, their friendship seemed so strong and close, and it was apparent that Claire trusted Allie a lot.
Although she was curious, Yara refused to intervene in others' affairs.
“My man is one of the richest men. As long as you agree to make the deal with me, I'll send you abroad, and I'll pay you an exorbitant sum of hush money,” offered Allie.
Fearing that Yara wouldn't buy her words, Allie took off a priceless necklace from her neck as a pledge right after saying that.
It was Yara's dream to go abroad. In fact, she knew that it was nearly impossible for her to fulfill that dream. At that moment, Yara was tempted by that hefty sum of hush money, albeit knowing that it was a dirty deal.
