Nicole's relentless insults caused a hint of embarrassment to manifest on Evangeline's face.
Earlier on, Evangeline was still in a blissful state and thought that things were starting to get better for her. Little did she realize that her happiness would be short-lived, and she was utterly shocked by the truth.
It was only after a long while that Evangeline returned to her senses. She turned stiffly and looked at Nicole. “You knew that I wasn't related to the Lambert family. Why, then, have you tampered with the paternity test? Nicole, what exactly are you up to?”
Nicole replied ambiguously, “For the past few days, you have seen with your own eyes how badly Mom wants to find her long-lost daughter. Unfortunately, she has been unable to locate her, and it upsets her mentally. In order to console Mom and keep the family intact, I lie to her.”
Evangeline was still confused. “But, why did you pick me in the end?”
Nicole answered with a sneer, “Do you really think that I want to choose you? You just happen to appear at the right place at the right time. I suppose it's your luck... Evangeline, let me warn you. Don't think that you are the real daughter of the Lambert family just because you have become part of the family. You're only a fake at best. You have no right to order me around! On the contrary, you will have to obey my instructions. Since I can let you rise to the top, I can also make you come back down! Don't forget that!”
Evangeline suppressed her anger and asked, “What the hell do you want from me? What do you want me to do?”
It was then Nicole got up and walked toward her. She fiddled with the exquisite necklace on Evangeline's neck before saying, “This limited-edition necklace is quite nice. There is only one piece in the entire Ackleton. Tsk! Mom loves you so much.”
With that, Nicole gave the necklace a hard tug, intending to pull the jewelry away from Evangeline's neck.
Evangeline quickly held on to her necklace and refused to let go. “This necklace has been gifted to me. You want to take it for yourself?”
“Do you really think you are the daughter of the Lambert family? Do you really think you have the right to enjoy such good treatment? Let me tell you something. Everything that you own in the Lambert family belongs to me, and that includes the necklace!”
“No way!” Evangeline guarded the necklace with her life and stared at Nicole with bloodshot eyes. “This is my necklace. Mom has given it to me. No one can take it away from me!”
With a sneer on her face, Nicole grabbed a fistful of the woman's hair and gave it a hard tug. “What a stubborn fool you are, Evangeline! Say, why don't I expose your real identity in front of Dad and Mom right now?”
“It hurts... Let go...”
It hurt so bad that Evangeline began to tear up. She instantly paled upon hearing Nicole's threats.
“Please, I beg of you. Please don't tell them the truth. I will do anything you ask of me,” she pleaded.
Although Evangeline had only stayed with the Lambert family for three days, she had fully experienced the luxury of being part of the high society. There was no need to worry about money, and she could buy whatever she fancied, not to mention the rise in her status.
If she returned to the Gellana family, it would mean that she would have to go back to the tough life she had before.
Trying to get into Nicole's good books, Evangeline removed the necklace and gave it to her. “You can have the necklace. In the future, I will give you anything you want. Please keep it a secret for me. Please don't expose my true identity...”
Nicole snorted and snatched the necklace away before glaring at Evangeline. “Hmph! I guess you have some sense.”
When Claire was passing by Evangeline's room, she heard some voices coming from within.
Worried that her daughter might not be used to living with the Lambert family, she knocked on the door. “Eva, are you still awake? Who are you talking to?”
She then opened the door and walked in.
