Chapter 223
Linda paced her small cell, her hands clenched tightly at her sides, her mind racing with thoughts. Every second she stayed in that stink cell, the more she felt like she was losing her sanity. And the stupid judge had also denied her bail just that morning.
She could hear the faint footsteps of the guard approaching.
"Visitor," the guard called out.
Linda’s face lit in expectation hoping it was her lawyer bringing her good news, but the moment she saw who it was, her expression soured. Karen stood on the other side of the bars, her face pale and drawn.
If Linda cared even a little bit about her, she would've asked how she was doing.
"What are you doing here?" Linda questioned, pressing her hands against the bars as she stared through at Karen. "Did you come to gloat about your so-called advantage over me? The one that’s going to be very short-lived, I assure you."
Karen’s eyes were red, her body trembling slightly as she shook her head. "I don’t have an advantage anymore, Linda. Kris has the evidence."
Linda’s breath caught in her throat. Her fingers gripped the bars tighter, her knuckles turning white. "What?" she hissed, her voice sharp. "You dared give it to him?"
Karen swallowed hard at the intimidating look in the older woman's eyes. "I didn’t. Someone else found it and gave it to him."
"You idiot!" Linda hissed under her breath as she slammed her fist against the bars. "Do you have any idea of the consequences of what you’ve done? This wouldn't have happened if you'd given the evidence to Susan to destroy them!"
Karen flinched, but she didn’t back down. "You can’t threaten me anymore, Linda. Kris already knows the truth about Tessa. He knows she isn’t his. I came here to tell you that you’ve lost your leverage over me. You’re going to be locked away for good, and you can’t harm me."
Linda’s lips curled into a slow, menacing smile. "Not even you believe that, dear Karen." she said, her voice low and dangerous. "You didn’t come here to tell me you’re free from me. You came because you’re scared. You know that I don’t make empty threats, and you’re terrified that I’ll follow through. I don’t bark without biting."
Karen’s breath hitched, as her knees trembled slightly. “I tried to stop my mother, I swear. I–”
“So it was your stupid mother who gave it to Kris?” Linda's teeth ground together. “Oh she doesn't know who she just messed with."
Karen's heart skipped a beat. She might be upset with her mother but she wasn't going to tolerate Linda's threats. "You’re bluffing. You can’t do anything to us."
"Is that a dare?" Linda’s voice dropped to a whisper, the words sliding out like venom before she let out a soft chuckle. "You're right. Maybe I won’t come for you or your mother. Maybe I’ll come for your daughter instead. After all, she’s not Kris’s, so he won’t mind if something happens to her."
Karen’s face drained of color. For a moment, they stared at each other, the silence heavy and suffocating. She couldn't believe Linda had just threatened to hurt a three year old girl.
“You're disgusting ”
Not wanting Linda to see her shaking hand, she quickly turned on her heel and scrambled out of the holding cells area, her steps hurried and frantic.
Linda watched her go, running a hand through her hair, her fingers tangling in frustration. "This can’t be happening," she muttered under her breath. "This can’t be happening."
