Chapter 140
Rosalie shuddered as she raised her head dazedly and encountered Jonathan’s eyes, which held a gentle ripple within their
gaze.
Meanwhile, Elodia’s expression changed, and she forced a couple of awkward chuckles before saying, “Mr. Youngblood, I didn’t realize… how deep your feelings for Rosalie were. Have you thought about tying the knot?”
“Tm prepared to marry her as soon as she agrees,’ replied Jonathan.
Staring at Jonathan in disbelief, Rosalie could feel her heart pounding wildly. She felt as if she had just heard something
absurd.
“How’s that possible?” blurted Elodia.
Jonathan glanced at Elodia casually and asked, “What’s not possible?”
The cold, icy gleam in his eyes sent a shiver down Elodia’s spine as a sense of dread welled up within her.
“That’s enough. Rosalie, let’s go,” said Jonathan, leading Rosalie away while holding her hand.
Trotting behind Jonathan. Rosalie left with him obediently.
At the mall, Ronin looked at Elodia disapprovingly and said. “Elodia, why did you mention your friend’s past imprisonment just now? You’re lucky that Mr. Youngblood was aware of it. If he had been unaware, it might have created an awkward situation between them and could even have led to their separation”
“Well, I did it on purpose!” Elodia resentfully thought. Then, she turned around to notice the expensive cup of coffee on the table that Jonathan had barely touched despite its high price.
“Humph! I think her boyfriend is nothing but a fake appearance. He only took a sip of this coffee and didn’t finish it. I’m sure he has never enjoyed good coffee and doesn’t know how to enjoy the finer things in life,” muttered Elodia, increasingly convinced of her speculation.
She was confident that a guy willing to marry a sanitary worker who had been once imprisoned was a loser, with his only merit being good looks.
“Elodia, don’t speak ill of others” Ronin furrowed his brows slightly, not appreciating how his girlfriend gossiped about their friends.
Elodia, on the other hand, paid no attention to him. She signaled for the waiter, intending to settle the bill. To her surprise, the waiter said. “The other gentleman’s subordinate has already paid for your bill.”
Elodia blinked in puzzlement and thought. “Subordinate? Jonathan has subordinates? Why didn’t we see them just now? He even…. paid the bill? Although we only had a few cups of coffee, this wasn’t a cheap meal and cost around 200 dollars! Average working-class individuals can hardly afford this, and he just settled the bill without saying a word?”
Elodia’s expression grew more contorted as her thoughts raced through her mind. “Who is this man? Is he deliberately displaying wealth, or does he actually possess money?”
Meanwhile, Jonathan and Rosalie had walked out of the mall when she suddenly said, “I won’t dwell on what you said earlier. I know you deliberately said those things for Elodia to hear”
“Your former colleague isn’t that great of a person, remarked Jonathan.
Rosalie was hereft of speech. If Jonathan and she were a genuine couple, Elodia’s earlier remarks were obviously meant to stir up trouble.
‘However, I suggest you take my words seriously,” added Jonathan.
Rosalie was caught off guard by his comment and thought, “What is he implying by asking me to take his words seriously? What he said just now… Does he know the implication of his words when he mentions he’s prepared to marry me?”
Rosalie’s thoughts remained jumbled as they rode in the car and arrived at the Youngblood residence. She exited the car with Jonathan, and they were about to enter the house when he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
-“By the way, I’ve experienced extreme hunger before,” he said. ‘I’ve been so hungry that I thought I might die.”
When he was still a child, Jonathan held his father’s urn and stayed alone in the tiny, dilapidated house for an extended period. During that time, he experienced intense hunger, so much so that he had nearly no strength left, feeling as if death loomed over him
In the end, he finally regained his strength when a neighbor knocked on his cloor and provided him with food.
Rosalie was taken aback by Jonathan’s words and fixed her gaze on his retreating figure. His calm delivery of those words unexpectedly stirred a sense of compassion within her.
She recalled how he had recounted his childhood stories to her when he was still known as “Jon”
Jonathan had told her about how his father died in the snow after his mother abandoned them. Rosalie felt sorry for him, as
he had endured some callous times before joining the Youngblood family.
On impulse, she clasped her hands together, which had been hanging by her sides. When Jonathan uttered his final sentence, an unconscious urge welled within her, reminiscent of how she used to reach out and pat him to comfort him.
However, Rosalie immediately reminded herself he was no longer the “Jon” she knew. He was Jonathan, someone she should. refrain from touching or comforting
