Chapter 939
On the silent night, Jonathan and Rosalie gazed at each other.
Rosalie felt as if she had been transported back to the first time she met Jonathan. Back then, his face was expressionless, just like now, and his deep, beautiful eyes were empty and cold.
“Jon, I’m sorry,” Rosalie whispered, her apologetic voice ringing clearly in the night.
Jonathan lowered his gaze and asked, “Sorry? What are you sorry for?”
“I know I should not have knelt and pleaded with you today. I knew how much you despised your mother, but I still begged you to forgive her,” Rosalie explained.
She had never imagined herself in such a difficult situation one day. Connor and Kaylie had been kind to her, and Rosalie wanted to repay their kindness. However, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt Jonathan’s feelings.
Maybe humans were always biased in some way. The person Rosalie cared the most about in the world was always Jonathan.
The person Rosalie did not want to hurt the most was also Jonathan.
Jonathan remained silent and kept his head down.
Rosalie continued to walk toward Jonathan slowly until they were just a step away from each other. “Jon, can you forgive me?”
Jonathan’s eyelashes trembled slightly, and he slowly raised his head. The emotions in his stunning eyes were incomprehensible. “You want me to forgive you?”
“Yes,” Rosalie answered.
“How much do you love me then?” Jonathan asked suddenly.
“I…” Rosalie took a deep breath and flashed back to the moment she fell into the sea five years before. “I love
you. You matter more to me than my own life.”
The moment Jonathan heard that, he chuckled, a mocking smile playing at the corner of his lips. “More important than your own life? Even though you know what Mrs. Smuckler did to me, you still kneel and beg me for someone you have only known for two or three years. Are you even aware of what you are saying right now?”
“What do I need to do for you to believe me?” Rosalie asked.
Jonathan’s voice turned cold. “Stay out of the matter between Mrs. Smuckler and me. Even if they come to you again and ask for your assistance, you will not say a word in their defense.”
Rosalie was taken aback. Jonathan’s words had put her in a difficult situation.
Deep down, Rosalie knew that it was impossible to make Jonathan give up seeking vengeance against Kaylie. After all, the resentments he had experienced were too great to be forgotten overnight.
Kaylie, on the other hand, was already in her old age, and Connor had always adored her. Connor and Kaylie would be unable to bear Jonathan’s vengeance.
Rosalie’s silence seemed to be within Jonathan’s expectations.
“You can’t even do this? And yet you claim that you love me so much?” Jonathan piped up indifferently. After saying that, he stood up, turned his back on Rosalie, and refused to look her in the eyes.
Seeing Rosalie would only make Jonathan’s mood worse, making his love for her seem ridiculous. In actuality, Jonathan had always known that Rosalie loved him less than he loved her.
Yet, Jonathan still repeatedly deluded himself, choosing to believe Rosalie’s lies and believing that what she said was true.
However, when confronted with a decision and put to the test, Rosalie’s lies burst like punctured bubbles, leaving Jonathan unable to deceive himself any longer.
“Go back. Tonight, I want to be alone here without anyone disturbing me,” Jonathan said coldly.
The next second, Rosalie’s arms wrapped around Jonathan from behind, and her face pressed against his back.

Jonathan’s body stiffened, and Jonathan heard Rosalie say, “I can refrain from pleading for Mrs. Smuckler, but Jon, Mr. Smuckler and Mrs. Smuckler have been kind to me. You have no idea how helpless I felt after losing my memory and still having to struggle in this vast city along with my daughter, fighting desperately for survival until I met them. That is when I felt like I could finally catch my breath and take a break.”
After a brief pause, Rosalie tightened her grip on Jonathan, as if doing so would give her the strength to go on. “I understand that you must hold Mrs. Smuckler accountable for what she did in the past, but can we leave it to the law? She was responsible for your severe injury and your father’s decision to die as a result of her actions. Please let the legal system handle it.”
Rosalie did not want Jonathan’s hands to be stained with the blood of Kaylie. That should never happen. Too much hatred would lead to an inability to let go.
Jonathan slowly turned around to face Rosalie. “What if I’m unwilling? Relying solely on a legal decision. appears to be too lenient for her. Can a few years in prison compensate for my father’s death?”
Rosalie was dumbfounded, her teeth subconsciously biting her lower lip. “So, what are you going to do to her?”
“It only seems fair that she pay with her own life since she killed a man, doesn’t it?” Jonathan said coldly. Rosalie’s face became even paler as the moonlight illuminated it, making her skin as white as a sheet. Her eyes were filled with fear.
