“You all thought Hayden was the daughter of Brook Downey, the eldest daughter of the Downey family and the legal inheritress of the Downey Group. She might be, provided that if she was fairly treated in the Downey family.”
Scarlett’s voice was so powerful that the reporters didn’t know what to say.
“How Downey Group grew into such a big company? Do you still think Brook Downey worked the magic? No, he relied on her ex-wife’s family. Brook Downey divorced his ex-wife after his business grew. Hayden’s mother passed away because of a haemorrhage the day Hayden was born. Think, people, think! How would a stepmother treat Hayden? The Downey Group shares? Don’t overestimate a person’s kindness.”
Scarlett sounded heartbroken. She was telling a sad tale she saw along these years.
Hayden grew up with her grandfather, and she was sent back to Brook Downey after Hayden’s grandfather passed away. Scarlett wanted to make sure that Hayden wasn’t over pampered. Hayden needed to live a hard life to train her will so that she won’t follow in her mother’s footsteps.
Scarlett didn’t want Hayden to grow up innocent and not knowing it was a dangerous world out there. She would rather be blamed and hated by Hayden. What was more important was that Hayden knew how to protect herself.
In the past ten years of being with the Downey family, Hayden didn’t disappoint Scarlett because she grew up so well and gotten herself into the best medical school in Nanking.
“Other than the name of Brook Downey’s daughter, Hayden was never treated like a Downey. Why would a girl in her 20s like Hayden clean up the mess left behind by those irresponsible people and an irresponsible company?”
The reporters looked at each other and didn’t know what to say after hearing what Scarlett said on the stage.
Many of them didn’t know the complicated relationship between the Downey family members. They even thought that Hayden was the daughter of Brook and Sofia Downey. After all, Hayden was spotted appearing at Chelsea Downey’s funeral.
Everyone thought that Hayden should be held responsible because she is the eldest daughter of the Downey family, and lived a luxurious life. The reporters even found out that she had quite a number of assets registered under her name.
Scarlett was tremoring out of anger. Hayden signalled her assistant, and her assistant quickly got onto the stage and brought Scarlett to the lounge.
There was only so much Scarlett could do for Hayden. Hayden had to walk the rest of the journey by herself.
“For some of you who might not know, the person who spoke is my aunt. She is the best friend of my late mother, and she is the wife of my late mother’s brother. She is a relative.”
Hayden stood up and looked directly to the reporters below the stage, “I didn’t invite her to the press conference at first, but as you know, there was news about me during this period. That’s where she heard about the press conference today. Since she has said it all, I guess I have nothing to explain anymore.”
“So you have nothing to do with the Downey Group, Ms. Downey?”
A reporter asked under the pressure, “I heard that the Green Lemon was under the Downey Group.”
“I think all of you have looked into what was registered under my name. I don’t own shares from Downey Group. The Green Lemon belonged to my late mother. My father asked me what I wanted before he passed away, so I requested to take back what was belonged to my late mother. I don’t think it is an inappropriate gesture.”
“But Ms. Downey, you came out to deal with the peasant who wanted to jump from the rooftop of Downey Group, and you said that you are in-charged. If you have nothing to do with the Downey Group, why would you went up and saved that person?”
Hayden stunned. She looked in the direction where the voice rose.
Doubts will never be resolved easily.
A man with a mask was sitting in the crowd of reporters. There was a sinister look in his eyes, and he sounded aggressive.
“Ms. Downey was…”
Benson, the Public Relations manager was about to stand up and explain, but Hayden stopped him. Hayden looked at the reporter who asked the question and replied, “Every lives matter. What should I do then? Watch him jump down from the building and happily clap my hands?”
