Aurelia rolled her eyes. 

“You can think whatever you want.” She didn’t want to explain anymore. She stood up and made her way towards the cabin. 

Leopold was still irked. He needed to know where the hell that guy came from. In hist mind, Aurelia couldn’t possibly have such a perverse interest. He feared someone had been a bad influence on her. 

In the children’s cabin, the chess game ended in a stalemate. 

Kane deliberately let William win, refraining from cornering him. 

William saw through it. When it came to chess, he could never match up to Kane. But he didn’t call out Kane. Instead, he grinned, revealing a radiant smile, “It looks like I’m not too bad at chess, right?” 

Kane’s lips curved up slightly. “We’re brothers, so we’re evenly matched in every way. 

William looked at him, his smile dissipating, suddenly becoming very serious, like a miniature adult. “Just remember, I’m your only brother, your real brother. Don’t consider that woman’s child as your sibling.” 

Kane nodded. Having grown up in the Stirling family, he knew that fraternal relationships involving different mothers were more about competition than kinship. 

How could they possibly get along when their mothers were rivals for their father’s affection? 

“Maybe it’ll be a sister.” 

William’s round eyes rolled thoughtfully, “If it’s a sister, you’ll be safe. You can even be nice. to her.” 

He said, winking cunningly, his fingers interlaced supporting his chin, “Let’s pray together. Dear God, Jesus, Holy Mary, may she give birth to only girls.” 

Aurelia came over, patting his head. She asked, “What are you up to, sweetie?” 

“I’m praying,” William said earnestly. 

Aurelia chuckled, “Praying for what?” 

William pulled a face. “Praying that Kane’s stepmother gives birth to a girl.” 

Aurelia thought, “If it was a natural conception, having a girl was entirely possible, with a 50% chance. 

“Having a little sister would be nice. Your Uncle Leopold has always wanted a daughter.

William crossed his arms and sighed, imitating an adult. “The womanizer!” 

Aurelia didn’t want William to speak ill of Leopold. After all, he was his biological father. 

“William, you shouldn’t talk about Uncle Leopold like that. Regardless of what happened between him and me, he’s always been good to you, hasn’t he?” 

William hung his head and said, “I was starting to like him, but he’s disappointed everyone, my grandparents, Uncle Avery, even my great–grandparents. We’re all disappointed in him.” 

Deep down, he wished his mother and Uncle Leopold could be happy together. Then, at least Kane’s family would be intact. 

Now, he and Kane were both children of single–parent households. 

Aurelia wrapped an arm around his shoulder, “Sweetie, the adult world is complex. It’s not as simple as you think. Maybe Uncle Leopold had his reasons. Don’t let the adult issues affect you, okay? No matter how Uncle Leopold changes, he’s always the Uncle Leopold who loves you. That won’t change.” 

William pursed his lips, fell silent for a moment, then looked up at her, “Will you and Uncle Leopold make up?”
