The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 223

Cordelia paused, napkin halfway to her mouth. "Mr. Grant?"

"Hello. Heard you've been studying abroad, how was it? You're back?" Grant appraised Cordelia from head to toe.

Cordelia thought desperately, “Damn, just got back and already ran into someone who knows Ronan, now what?” She could only hope that Grant would leave soon to attend his social engagements, get drunk, and forget he ever saw her.

Ronan rarely came out at night, so she wasn't worried about bumping into him.

"Yeah, it was good. I'm back for exams. A friend wanted to grab dinner.” Cordelia finished speaking, and then a wave of nausea washed over her, and she began to vomit again.

Grant felt awkward lingering, so he said, "Well, Mrs. Evans, I have other commitments. I'll be off."

Cordelia nodded.

When Grant got back to their private room, he sat next to Ronan. "Did Mrs. Evans return? I just saw her," he asked Ronan.

Ronan was silent for a moment. "Yes, she's back, having dinner with her friend."

"Mr. Evans, you move fast. Couldn't get her pregnant while in the country, but you managed to do it abroad? How often are you flying to the States?"

"How do you know she's pregnant?" Ronan's smile didn't reach his eyes, which were icy cold.

"It's obvious, she's showing signs of morning sickness. She was throwing up. But it doesn't look like she's showing yet."

"Right," Ronan said, keeping his face expressionless.

She was back!

She was back, and she was carrying another man's child.

She left four months ago. If the baby was his, she would be showing by now. Besides, she had taken a contraceptive pill in front of him. The chances of him being the father were next to none.

Jamie was also in the States. If Grant hadn't bumped into her tonight, she probably would have continued playing dead.

...

Cordelia went back to her seat and said to Brooklyn, "I'm done eating. Let's go."

"Are you feeling better?" Brooklyn asked. "Which restroom did you go to? I couldn't catch up with you."

"Oh, it's the one on the left. Let's go, I want to get some sleep and study. I have an exam tomorrow."

"Alright."

After Edwin dropped Cordelia back at her hotel, he took Brooklyn home.

When Brooklyn's phone rang, she nearly dropped it in her haste. "What's the matter? Answer it." Edwin watched as Brooklyn shivered beside him. "You see a ghost or something?"

"It's like the Grim Reaper is calling me. He says die at midnight, and I won't live till dawn," Brooklyn said.

She took a deep breath to calm herself, and answered the phone, trying to sound composed, "Mr. Evans, you wanted to see me?"
