"Where have you been, Cordelia?" Petra inquired, her gaze briefly lifting from her mug of steaming coffee.
"Oh, just had a meeting at Empower Operations," Cordelia replied, slipping off her coat.
Petra just hummed in response and went about her business. Neither of them spoke again.
When Cordelia got home, she asked Janice about her son's well-being.
"Ma'am, Callum's been asking about you a lot lately. He wants you to come home. Maybe you could swing by when you have a chance?" Janice suggested with a maternal concern in her voice.
Cordelia hummed in acknowledgment, considering catching the early bus tomorrow morning. It was already late, and the last bus to Millstone had stopped running for the night.
Just then, her phone buzzed—it was Ronan.
"Hey," Cordelia answered.
"Janice mentioned you're heading back to Millstone. Join me?"
"When?"
"Right now."
Cordelia glanced at her watch—it was already past four. It would be close to nine by the time she got to Millstone. Hitching a ride seemed like the best option and a good chance to check on Callum.
"Alright."
She hastily packed a small bag and headed to Ronan’s grandpa's house, where Ronan was already waiting for her downstairs.
After getting in the car, the two of them sat in silence. Cordelia slowly drifted to sleep. When she woke, they were pulling up to Pearl Palms. Ronan was already unloading stuff from the car.
At the doorstep, a little figure stood eagerly awaiting them. "Dad's back! Where's Mom? Didn't Janice say you were both coming?"
