The call connected instantly, and Brooks' smooth voice filled Evelyn's ear. "Evelyn."
"Hey Brooks, could you maybe..." Evelyn cut straight to the chase as soon as the call connected. She was about to ask him to come pick her up when a large hand suddenly snatched her phone away.
"Charles!" she exclaimed, realizing too late that Charles had already ended the call.
Her face turned stormy as she reached out to reclaim her phone, but Charles just held it higher. With nearly eight inches of height difference, Evelyn couldn't reach it even on her tiptoes.
Frustrated, she kicked out with her high heel, catching Charles right in the shin. She’s fueled by anger, and didn't even hold back.
Charles winced, sucking in a sharp breath. "Evelyn, are you trying to murder your own man?" he said with a dry tone, his eyes locked onto her fiery expression.
"Pfft!" Evelyn scoffed, rolling her eyes. After five years of being with him, he had the nerve to call himself her man now. What a joke.
Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, Evelyn lunged for her phone again. She was almost there, but Charles pulled back just in time, causing the phone to slip from her grasp and land in a nearby puddle.
Charles glanced at the caller ID – it was Dahlia. He ignored it, and his focus was on Evelyn. Despite her earlier harsh words, he took a moment to calm himself, lighting a cigarette to cool his temper.
After ending Dahlia's call, he extended a hand to Evelyn, but she slapped it away, determined to get up on her own.
Her foot hurt, and the reality of her situation settled in. Her phone was dead and now her ankle was sprained. There was no way she could get back to the city alone. The area was mostly deserted, and despite the city's usual safety, being stranded here was risky.
Charles' expression darkened. The phone rang again, and glancing at Evelyn, he finally answered, "Dahlia."

The readers' comments on the novel: The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)
What a bad novel. Evil deeds rules the entire story, no ending, villains characters succeed, no way out for the good people. I was hoping for better twists but disappointed again and again. Time close the book for me, no more, enough....
When will Evelyn's sufferings end? You mean to say evil rules the world? No longer funny, the twists are getting ridiculous....
Wow Finally! Thanks!...
More chapters please...
