"What did you just say?"
Charles' face changed instantly upon hearing the words. He marched over to the lady behind the counter, his presence so intense that she took a step back in fear.
Evelyn watched Charles, her heart brimming with resentment. Who was he trying to fool with this act?
Suddenly, Evelyn raised her hand and shoved Charles hard, pushing him away. She pointed at the shattered pieces on the floor and said coldly, "Did you hear her? She said this was a birthday gift that Charlie spent over two months making by hand for you! Do you get that?!"
"You went and smashed it with your own hands! Once again, as a father, you’ve stomped all over Charlie's love for you!"
"Charles, Charlie must have the worst luck to be your daughter. You’ve been given the chance to hurt her time and again!"
Charles stood there, stunned. The cup wasn’t something Brooks and Evelyn made as a token of their love; it was a birthday gift Charlie had made for him, and he had just smashed it.
He thought of his little girl, who was only five years old but spent more than two months making him a gift. Sandy didn’t even know his birthday. He didn’t blame her; kids often forget their parents' birthdays. But Charlie remembered, and that warmed his heart, even if Evelyn had reminded her.
The fact that she was willing to make him a gift by hand, that intention alone said so much. His daughter loved him more than he had ever realized.
And in these last five years, he…
"Charles, you’re truly despicable!" Evelyn closed her eyes in pain, and when she opened them, she no longer looked at the shattered pieces. She had cherished it because Charlie poured so much time and effort into it. But Charles had shattered it. She realized it was better this way. Charles didn’t deserve it.
After saying this, Evelyn turned and walked away. Charles reached out, grabbing her wrist, "Evelyn!"
Evelyn immediately struggled, disgust written all over her face. Brooks stepped in and grabbed Charles' wrist. As the two men squared off, Evelyn pulled her wrist free, staggering back several steps. A wave of dizziness hit her. Today, her emotions had been running high, and she was just holding on. The emotional upheaval pushed her to her limit.
Evelyn wanted to keep it together, but her vision blurred, and she fell forward. Before she hit the ground, Charles, quicker than Brooks, caught her tightly in his arms.

The readers' comments on the novel: The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn)
What a bad novel. Evil deeds rules the entire story, no ending, villains characters succeed, no way out for the good people. I was hoping for better twists but disappointed again and again. Time close the book for me, no more, enough....
When will Evelyn's sufferings end? You mean to say evil rules the world? No longer funny, the twists are getting ridiculous....
Wow Finally! Thanks!...
More chapters please...
