The Day Our Promise Breaks (Charles and Evelyn) novel Chapter 491

As soon as the thought of being with Charles crossed her mind, a shiver ran down Evelyn's spine. She couldn't let history repeat itself from seven years ago. She had to stay calm. Fighting back would only fuel Charles's excitement. It was a fact—men and women weren't on equal footing when it came to physical strength. If Charles lost it, she couldn't possibly fend him off, no matter how hard she tried. The outcome would be his triumph and her agony.

"Charles, take it easy. I'll get you to the hospital," she said, her voice softened, steering clear of a head-on confrontation. She edged back, trying to put some distance between them.

"Eve, I don't want the hospital. I want you," Charles said, closing the gap she'd just managed to create.

Hearing his audacity, Evelyn's anger flared, but she knew better than to provoke him. She took a deep breath, pushing down her rage. "Charles, didn't you say you love me? If that's true, how could you force me?"

"Let me go, and I'll grab my phone to call an ambulance," she pleaded. All she wanted was for him to let go so she could escape and prevent the worst.

"Eve, I don't want the hospital," Charles insisted, undeterred. His breath grew hotter, and his grip on her waist firmer.

Evelyn's heart raced, her voice rising, "Charles, stop it! Let me go!"

Bloodshot eyes met hers. He couldn't hold back anymore. Evelyn shivered with fear, and as he leaned in, she shouted, "Charles, if you force me tonight, I'll hate you forever!"

In his denial, he drew her closer, his hand gripping her waist, pulling her in, denying her any chance to refuse again. He leaned in to kiss her.
