The Devil's Betrothed novel Chapter 639

Chapter 639: Shopping With Brother

Lucian and Rina went to the market. Rina, amazed at the sight of the sprawling market with its wide, crowded streets and countless shops, couldn’t help but gasp in shock.

"Brother, this market is even bigger than the one in Wimark. It’s so beautiful."

Lucian nodded. "If you like anything, feel free to buy it."

She hummed, then looked at the rows of shops in confusion. "There are so many shops. How will I know which one is good and where I should go?"

"Every shop is good. Just choose any one."

Her expressions turned anxious. "Brother, I have never even dared to look at such big shops before, let alone enter one."

This reminded Lucian of the poor life they had endured. She wasn’t wrong to feel overwhelmed and indecisive. She was still so young and had no experience buying anything of such value. The clothes they wore were always made by Gwen. There were only a few instances when their father bought clothes for them, and when Lucian started working, he began to buy things for the family.

Even though he was a lord by birth, Lucian was raised in poverty because Gwen and Paul had no resources. After he became able to work, Lucian started building his force with Paul’s help, who introduced him to the survivors of Mortimer’s attack. These people were secretly rooting for Lucian to one day take over the northeast. They were all loyal to his biological father Colin Rainier and supported Lucian in secret.

It took Lucian a long time to build his loyal forces. Even after he started looting Luis’ wealth in past one year, he didn’t use it for personal gain and continued to live the same modest life. He only used the gold and silver he acquired to feed the people working for him.

But now, with his wishes finally fulfilled and the wealth officially became his, he didn’t mind using it for his family, who had sacrificed so much for him.

"Brother," Rina’s voice brought him back to reality, "You’ve been to the capital for a long time. Don’t tell me you really don’t know which shop to go to."

Lucian realized she had a point. Thanks to Erin, he had been to various shops. He guided Rina to the ones Erin often visited.

"Go to that shop. I’ll be back in a while. You can select whatever you want, and I’ll pay once I return," he instructed.

"What? You’re not coming with me?" she asked, feeling a bit wary about entering the shop alone.

"I will, but I have to meet someone first," he replied, his gaze following a man across the street who was waiting for him. The man was one of his own.

"Alright, but don’t take long."

Lucian nodded, watching her enter the shop before crossing the road to meet the man. frёewebηovel.cѳm

Rina, still hesitant, stepped into the shop. A salesgirl approached her, observing her carefully. A young girl with her brown hair set in two braids, wearing ordinary clothes. From her appearance, it was clear she wasn’t from a noble family.

"Little girl, have you lost your way?" the salesgirl asked gently.

Rina shook her head. "I am here to buy a dress."

"Umm, little girl, the clothes here are expensive. Are you sure you can afford them?"

"My brother can afford it. He has lots of money."

The salesgirl glanced at the door. "Where is he?"

"He’s gone somewhere, but he said he’d return soon. Until then, I can select a few dresses for myself."

"Lady Erin, did you like the dresses you tried on?" a salesgirl immediately bowed to her. "Please do not mind this poor girl’s presence. We are driving her away."

"I did like the dresses, but someone’s disrespectful words spoiled my mood, and now I’ve lost the will to buy anything," Erin replied, looking at Rina, who was staring back at her in awe, more like she was admiring the dress Erin was wearing. Her eyes were screaming how beautiful that dress looked.

"Who dared disrespect you, Lady Erin?" One sale’s girl asked.

"You," Erin said, fixing her gaze on the salesgirl who had nearly made Rina cry. "Is this how you treat people in your shop?"

"Lady Erin, that girl—"

"What about her?" Erin coldly cut her off.

"She can’t afford the dress. She just wants to try them on," the sales girl clearly shaking.

Erin raised a brow, "And what’s the issue with that? Don’t I try on dresses in your shop and leave without buying any if I don’t like them? Yet, I see you welcoming me every time I return and showering me with newly designed dress. Isn’t your job to serve your customers with fairness, or do you check their pockets first?"

"No, Lady Erin. I—"

Erin ignored her and turned to the salesgirl who had been polite to Rina. "Let that girl try whatever she wants. If she likes anything, I will pay for it. But if she doesn’t like any of your dresses and we leave without buying anything, neither I nor anyone I know will ever step foot in this shop again."

The salesgirls felt their hands turn sweaty. Losing wealthy customers like Erin would get them thrown out of their jobs by their master. Thankfully, the manager was gone, or they would be in serious trouble.

Rina was shocked to see how the salesgirls trembled at this beautiful woman’s words. She admired Erin even more. Despite her strict demeanor and authoritative tone, her eyes showed the kindness hidden beneath. Rina could see that kindness because her brother was the same—kind but always cold in his demeanor. This woman reminded Rina of her brother.
